The sensitivity of baroreceptor reflex was determined by the "neck chamber" method at a pressure of 40 mm Hg in patients with mild, moderate and malignant arterial hypertension (AH). A 24-hour blood monitoring was performed in patients with mild and moderate AH. There was a negative correlation between the lowering values in blood pressure on baroreceptor stimulation and the incidence of hypertensive crises in all the groups. There was also a negative correlation between the baroreceptor sensitivity and the daily blood pressure variations in patients with moderate AH. The findings suggest that a decrease in baroreceptor sensitivity might be a predictor of the critical course of AH.

Carotid sinus baroreceptor stimulation by generating subatmospheric pressure in a special neck chamber was used to examine the hemodynamic baroregulation in males divided into 4 groups: (1) healthy subjects; (2) patients with Stages IB to IIA hypertensive disease; (3) those with Stage IIB hypertension; (4) those with malignant hypertension. In Group 2, the patients had a lower ability of carotid baroreflexes to damp elevated systolic pressure whereas in Group 3 there was baroreflex readjustment and effective vasomotor control was increased, which appeared as more pronounced lowering of blood pressure elevations. The patients with malignant hypertension showed a decreased effective baroreflex control of circulation, which might be one of the factors causing that course of the disease.
Circadian variations of blood pressure (BP) in dependence on neurogenous baroreceptor control in patients with essential hypertension (EH) or renovascular hypertension (RH) were studied. Patients with EH demonstrated significantly greater decrease of systolic as well as diastolic BP at night compared to those with RH. Circadian variation rates of systolic and mean BP were also higher in patients with EH. Baroreceptor test exhibited higher cardiochronotropic effect in patients with EH. They had also negative correlation between BP variation rates and BP reaction to baroreceptor test which is absent in patients with RH. The data obtained suggest that neuroregulation mechanisms have less effect on BP level in RH than in EH.
Hemodynamics and myocardial contractility were examined in 36 male coronary patients and 20 normal subjects at rest, in a 15 degree head-down tilt and during combined antiorthostatic/isometric exercise (AOSIE). Antiorthostatic position was associated with increased stroke and minute volumes, cardiac index in normal subjects, and reduced stroke volume and left ventricular contractility in coronary patients of the 3d-4th functional class. AOSIE produced further increase in left-heart pumping and contractility in normal subjects, and a decrease in stroke and minute volumes, cardiac index and contractility parameters of calibration apex cardiograms in coronary patients of all functional classes. It is concluded that AOSIE can be used for the assessment of left ventricular myocardial function in normal subjects and coronary patients alike.

The humoral immunity status to poliomyelitis viruses was studied in a group of children under 3 years previously immunized at least 3 times with SLV incorporated into dragee-candy. A regular increase with age of the number of subjects possessing virus-neutralizaing antibody to poliomyelitis viruses was demonstrated, the incidence of antibody to the three virus types being distributed by age groups as follows: under 1 year -- 24%, 1 year -- 53%, 2 years -- 71.2%, 3 years -- 84.8%. The immune response in children was observed to begin developing after the first vaccination mainly to one virus type. Among the children of 1--3 years of age examined, 1.1% to 6.0% had no antibody to polioviruses. An attempt was made to induce antibody production in these children by an additional vaccination with liquid SLV monitoring the implantation of the vaccine virus in the intestinal tract and seroconversion in the blood. Consecutive administration of the oral liquid vaccine of national make was found to result in immune response in 100% of vaccinees.
The authors submit the results of clinicoechocardiographic investigations of 35 patients with beta-thalassemia aged from 4 to 37 years of whom 23 patients were with acute beta-thalassemia, 6 with an intermediary form and 6 with a heterozygotic form of the disease. Various echocardiographic changes were observed in patients with acute and intermediary forms of beta-thalassemia, i.e. prolapse of the mitral valve (52 and 50 per cent), the presence of fluid in the pericardium (13 and 17 per cent), structural changes in the valvular apparatus (56 and 83 per cent), disorders of the inotropic and diastolic functions of the heart.

Under analysis was the material of the department of urgent and consultation medical aid (sanitary aviation) for the last 20 years. It was found that under conditions of surgical departments of central regional hospitals multiple relaparotomies made up 12.5% of all reoperations. It was shown that results of the multiple relaparotomies were dependent on urgent coming of a consultant and active surgical treatment on the spot. Reconstructive operations for intestinal fistulas must be performed under conditions of a specialized proctological department.
