[Assessment of the community health nursing curriculum in relation to the modified Stake curriculum evaluation model].

The modified Stake curriculum evaluation model was implemented in practice to evaluate the Community Nursing Science curricula of three Nursing Colleges and the method used is outlined. Some of the results obtained regarding the model's description matrix are: . students are not familiar with the philosophy of Community Nursing Science; . students doubt their readiness for clinical work directly after training; . only one of the tutors in Community Nursing Science had applicable clinical experience in community nursing; . satisfaction regarding the content and evaluation of Community Nursing Science exists amongst students. The purpose of the evaluation was to identify shortcomings in the curricula and and to facilitate curriculum improvement.

[Clinical evaluation and the OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Evaluation)].

Although clinical evaluation and examination is regarded as the basis of scientifically founded nursing, it is inherently a subjective process. This process is complicated by the variability of four inter-related systems, namely the evaluator, the clinical environment, the student nurse and other individuals. The purpose of this study was analysis of current evaluative practices and the Objective Structured Clinical Examination; and determination of the perception of clinical educational personnel and student nurses in this regard. Consequently a descriptive exploratory survey was done by means of questionnaires. For the purpose of this study, clinical teaching personnel and student nurses associated with the nine affiliated hospitals of one nursing college in the Transvaal were approached to participate in the study.

[The teaching function of the registered nurse--I].

A descriptive exploratory survey was undertaken by means of a questionnaire submitted to student nurses and registered nurses of hospitals affiliated with a nursing college in the Transvaal. The aim of the study was to establish whether, and to what extent, the training function of the ward sister is realised in practice. Analysis of the data showed the ward sister to be aware of her training function and her responsibility towards the student nurse as learner. It appears that the ward sister believes herself to be adequately involved with the basic care of patients and making a significant contribution to the training of student nurses. However, the observations and the experience of the student nurse differ from this point of view. She is of the opinion that more can be done in the ward to help her achieve her training needs. The fact that in many cases she is primarily considered as a worker, comes as a great disappointment.
