The method of pyrolysis--gas chromatography was used to study the composition of cultural liquids obtained upon the incubation of desert soil samples in a rich growth medium. The composition of pyrolysis products was found to depend on the time of incubation. Cultural liquids differed in their composition from the original growth medium. This method is a dynamical one, and can be employed to control the activity of microorganisms.
Over the past two decades there has arisen a new branch of biology--space biology. This short review is devoted to a discussion of its achievements. It considers the results of research in the area of gravitation biology, and an account is made of studies in those areas of radiobiology which have relevance to the study of the cosmos. There is a brief summary of the results of the search for the upper and lower limits of the biosphere, and information is presented regarding the measures employed to maintain planetary quarantine. A great deal of attention has been given to the search for extraterrestrial life, one of the most important of problems. The results obtained with the aid of the American Viking probes on Mars are given special attention. The review presents experimental data based both upon data obtained in experiments on biological specimens during space flights of satellites and space vehicles, and also upon the results of laboratory research.
As the level of ploidy rises in Pullularia pullulans, this causes an increase in the frequency of spontaneous and UV-induced auxotrophic mutants as well as mutants with a modified respiration activity while the frequency of morphological mutants decreases. The latter can arise as a result of recessive and dominant mutations. A higher frequency of morphological mutants in the haploid may be result of recessive mutations. It is likely that the frequency of dominant mutations increases in cultures with a higher level of ploidy since, as the difference between the frequency of UV-induced mutants and the frequency of spontaneous morphological mutants increases.
A direct method is proposed to select less toxic mutants of Aspergillus terricola on a culture of fibroblasts. The conidia are first irradiated with UV, and then are used to grow colonies on the glass surface of tubes or flasks containing medium 199. The cells of fibroblasts are added thereupon and the two cultures are being grown together for 24--48 hours. The colonies which inhibit the growth of fibroblasts to a less extent are selected using microscopy. The method can be used for primarily selection of experimentally produced mutants of Aspergillus which form fibrinolytic enzymes possessing low toxicity.
