[Epidemiological features of hospital purulent-septic infections in otolaryngological wards].

Prospective epidemiological observation in an otorhinolaryngological hospital has made it possible to distinguish the specific features of pyoseptic nosocomial infections. Such infections, appearing as cross re- and superinfections, are most frequently induced by staphylococci, as well as by Proteus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. High risk groups include patients with purulent otitis and sinusitis, who have contacted infection through instruments in examination and dressing rooms. The main sources of infection are patients with pyoseptic infections of the ear and sinuses.

[Ultrastructure of the stria vascularis of the auricular labyrinth of the rabbit].

In the composition of the stria vascularis of the rabbit cochlea there are three types of cells: edging, medial and basal cells. The structure of these cells, their disposition and interrelationships within the stria vascularis are described. The nodes of the basal membrane whose ramification covers long mitichondria concentrating at the basement of edging cells are found in the structure of capillaries of the cochlea stria vascularis. It may be supposed that this powerful mitochondrial apparatus refers to the capillary system of the stria vascularis and represents a hypertrophic mitochondrial apparatus of pericytes. The capillaries of the stria vascularis are distributed mainly in longitudinal direction while the capillaries disposed transversely which are likely to be anastomoses were also found.

[Microcirculation of the nasal mucosa in persons of the older age groups].

Specific features of microcirculation of the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity of 32 patients over 57 years were investigated. Additionally, microcirculation of the mucous membrane of the nasal septum and wall of untreated rabbits and rabbits, that for 5 months were on a cholesterol enriched diet, was examined. It was shown that in both cases the transport function of capillaries and, consequently, the structure of the mucous membrane deteriorated which may contribute to the development of persistent rhinosinusitis.

[Otitis externa in industrial workers].

The problem of the therapy of otitis externa in industrial workers is one of the most serious in otiatria. The fact that the disease is caused by various factors is responsible for the low effectiveness of traditional therapy. This paper describes a combined treatment which includes trichopol ointment, drugs that enhance regenerative processes, drugs that decrease sensitization, and elements of chronotherapy. The treatment proved to be effective and can therefore be recommended for clinical application.

[Reasons for the use of mydocalm in the prevention and treatment of antibiotic-induced sensorineural hearing loss].

The applicability of mydocalm for the prevention and therapy of hypoacusis caused by kanamycin, an antibiotic of the aminoglycoside series, was investigated in animal (guinea-pig) experiments. The changes in nucleic acids and nuclear size of the spiral organ were used as parameters. Hearing loss as shown by the lack of Preyer's reflex developed in response to kanamycin injected at a dose of 50 mg/kg/day for 14 days. In the spiral organ nuclei of hair cells were in the state of functional shrinkage. The use of mydocalm at a dose of 12 mg/kg in parallel with or after kanamycin injection nuclei of receptor cells did not shrink, Preyer's reflex did not disappear (in the case of parallel administration of mydocalm and kanamycin) or recovered (in the case of mydocalm administration after kanamycin injection). In summary, mydocalm as a vasoactive and neurotrophic drug can be used for the prophylaxis and therapy of hypoacusis caused by aminoglycoside antibiotics and can be recommended for practical application.

[Immunotherapy with leakadin in the combined therapy of acoustic neurinomas].

The paper reports the data obtained on the efficacy of a new anti-cancer immunomodulator leacadin in neurinoma of the acoustic nerve. Leacadin participates in formation of a close regulatory relation between the brain and immune system, promotes centralization of immunity regulation in conditions of surgical trauma. The drug can also increase the level of natural killers and helpers, reduce neurosensitization and the amount of suppressors.

[A method of organ-preserving tonsillotomy].

An original method of conservative tonsillotomy proposed for surgical treatment of hypertrophic tonsils in preschool children preserves anatomical structures of the tonsils and relevant physiological functions, reduces duration of treatment, prevents chronic inflammation in the tonsillar tissues. The operation implies removal of small hypertrophic parts of the tonsil primarily in the lower pole. The operation is performed under anesthesia with tracheal intubation and employment of Bochon loop.
