[Medium molecular weight molecules and their fractions in Astrakhan rickettsial fever].

The level of medium-weight molecules (MWM) over the course of disease and changes in the lipid share of MWM fractions at the peak of disease were studied in patients with Astrakhan rickettsial fever (ARF). The level of MWM was significantly increased in comparison with the control and MWM concentration clearly correlated with the severity of intoxication. A level higher than 600 U is an unfavorable sign of a grave course. The significance of the lipid part of MWM fraction in the formation of the intoxication syndrome in ARF is shown.

[Lactoferrin and fibrinogen degradation products in saliva].

The authors suggest a simple and convenient procedure for measuring acute-phase proteins, lactoferrin, fibrinogen and its degradation products, in mixed human saliva by the agar immunodiffusion test with appropriate monospecific antisera. Examinations of 1205 salivary samples have revealed that salivary fibrinogen degradation products and lactoferrin detection rates do not depend on the subject's sex but are growing with age and intensity of the aggressive admixture effects in inhaled air; they are also related to the intensity of the inflammatory and proliferative processes in the oral cavity and bronchopulmonary system, the values varying from 4-16 percent in health to 68.8-71.8 percent in disease. In monitoring salivary acute-phase proteins detection rates make up 100 percent in the patients and 0-4 percent in normal subjects. The authors come to a conclusion that measurements of salivary acute-phase proteins may be used in screening of the population to detect subjects at risk for further diagnostic examinations.

[Isolation and properties of specific trypsin inhibitor from human seminal plasma].

Gel filtration of human seminal plasma on Sephadex G-100 revealed four zones displaying the activity of trypsin inhibitors. The inhibitor from the zone corresponding to the molecular mass of 30-40 kDa was obtained in an electrophoretically homogeneous form. The purification procedure included gel filtration on Sephadex G-100, anion-exchange chromatography on DEAE-Sephadex A-50, ammonium sulfate precipitation and hydrophobic chromatography on phenyl-Sepharose 4B. The inhibitor thus obtained has a specific activity of 1.29 IU/mg protein in a caseinolytic test, molecular mass of about 36 kDA and pI of 7.2. The glycosidase and lectin analysis of the carbohydrate component of the protein revealed the presence of neuraminic (sialic) acid and galactose (galactosamine). The amino acid composition of the protein was determined. Antibodies to this protein were obtained; the high specificity of the protein for human sperm was demonstrated The inhibitor was found to be immunochemically identical to previously described prostatic beta-globulin.

[Lactoferrin and leukocytes in the blood of oncologic patients].

Peripheral blood lactoferrin level and leukocyte count were measured by enzyme immunoassay in the sera of 288 normal subjects and 247 patients with malignant tumors of various localization. Normal lactoferrin level has been found 1055 +/- 191.0 ng/ml. In the patients it was changed either higher or lower, irrespective of the tumor site. This has led the authors to a conclusion on the acute phase pattern of the time course of lactoferrin level in oncologic patients. Elevation of lactoferrin level anticipated changes in leukocyte count.

[The potentials of gastric biopsy in the diagnosis of dysplasia and cancer of the stomach].

The paper is concerned with the clinico-morphological analysis of the state of the art in diagnosing dysplasia and cancer of the stomach using gastric biopsy in a nononcological department of a regional hospital. Within three years, 13,459 gastroscopies were performed, 31.7% of them involving a biopsy. Cancer of the stomach was diagnosed in 87 patients including incipient form--in 8 (9.2%). Degree II-III dysplasia and alterations suspicious of cancer were identified in 49 while degree I-II dysplasia--in 180 cases. It is emphasized that patients with dysplasia including degree I-II lesions be followed using morphologic, endoscopic and clinical procedures.

[The nature of the antigenic restructuring of tumors of the human prostate].

An immunochemical study of normal prostatic tissue, adenoma and cancer identified the following five antigens: alpha 2-ferroprotein, tissue gamma-esterase, lactoferrin, acidic phosphatase and prostatic beta-globulin. The two latter proteins proved organo-specific prostatic antigens. Levels of all the proteins were measured in normal, adenoma and cancer tissues. A sharp drop in the concentration of organospecific proteins was observed in tumor tissue. The study established a relationship between the level of organospecific proteins and cell differentiation of cancer, which was particularly pronounced for beta-globulin.

[Organ-specific human prostate beta-globulin during tumor growth].

An organ specific protein antigen having an electrophoretic mobility of beta-globulin was demonstrated in human prostate. Its physicochemical properties (relative electrophoretic mobility, diffusion coefficient, molecular weight and relation to different precipitating agents) were determined. The indirect immunofluorescence technique revealed that this antigen is synthesized by the glandular epithelium of the main glands. A statistically significant decrease was found in the concentration of prostatic beta-globulin in tumors of the prostate. The synthesis of this protein was shown to start only in the period of puberty.

[Stroma formation in epithelial malignant tumors].

The mechanism of stroma-formation and rearrangement of the stroma was studied on 221 cases of cancer of the lung, stomach and mammary gland using histological, histochemical and electron-microscopy methods of investigation. It was established that multiplying epithelial elements of teh tumour induced proliferation of histiogenic and vascular fibroblasts, activating them. Active fibroblasts play a double role: they either produce fibres and interstitial matter of the tumorous stroma, or participate in desintegration of preceding and newly formed collagenous structures. The processes of stroma-formation comply with the conventional schemes of normal fibrillogenesis and rearrangement of the interstitial tissue. It was shown that fibroblasts of the tumour stroma was capable of phagocytosis of a mature collagen. It is supposed that in the course of the tumorous growth correlation between the parenchyma and stroma is maintained, the leading role being played by the epithelium.
