[The psychopathology and clinical picture of schizophrenia with a course of paroxysmal and paroxysm-like disorders].

Overall 70 patients suffering from attack-like progressive schizophrenia associated with paroxysmal and paroxysm-like disorders were examined. The clinico-psychopathological aspects of the disease were many and varied. The common signs of the disease included the presence of affective disorders, their considerable portion among other psychopathological manifestations. The dynamics of affective disorders specified in many respects the common character of the disease and the degree of the process progression and, in many cases, it tended to the formation of affective continuity. The common characteristics of the disease also included the presence of early disease signs which occurred long before manifest features, i.e. since the very childhood. The study of the structure of paroxysmal and paroxysm-like conditions revealed their diversity and certain specificities as compared with analogous paroxysms seen in the clinical picture of epilepsy. In addition to the clinical and psychopathological characteristics and the dynamics of personality disorders, this will provide evidence in favour of a special variant of the endogenous process.

Adult↗

[The clinical picture and dynamics of long-term late remissions in the outcome of shift-like schizophrenia].

In 59 patients with shift-like schizophrenia above 60 years the author studied some clinical traits and the development of long-term (10--20 years and more) hypersthenic, paranoial and psycopath-like remissions. The development of such remissions actually reflected the tendency to a regressive course and a stabilization of the process at old age. There was a slow extinguishing of affective swings which were observed in the majority of the cases in the initial stages of such remissions. There was also an alleviation of productive disorders (paranoial, hallucinatory, psychopath-like, abscessional, etc.) as well as a certain compensation of negative disturbance. At the age of 55--65 the patients displayed a long-term stable condition with a monotonous (mainly hypersthenic) mood, rudimentary psychotic symptoms, certain personality abnormalities, an increased level of social adaptation and working capacity.

Aged↗

[Results of an epidemiologic study of mental patients over 60 years of age in one of the districts of Moscow].

The convened investigation was related to a clinico-epidemiological study of mental disorders in individuals older than 60 who lived in the Kiev district of Moscow. The study was made of the entire population by a nonselective method with a fulfillment of a specially elaborated epidemiological chart. On the basis of an analysis of such charts and a personal interview of 1024 elderly patients and 215 elderly individuals not registered in the neuropsychiatric dispensary it was possible to receive some data concerning the prevalence rates, diagnostical, sex and age content of mental diseases in patients over 60, living in the given district.

Age Factors↗

[Results of a continuous study of a population of schizophrenic patients more than 60-years-old, registered at Moscow Psychoneurologic Dispensary No. 2].

The authors conducted an overall study of schizophrenic patients, older than 60 years of age and registered in one of the Moscow dispensaries. It was demonstrated that the elderly amount to 17% of the whole schizophrenic population in the given dispensary. The percentage of late schizophrenia (16.7%) is relatively high, although the percentage of them in a hospital population is even higher (27-35%). The sex ratio demonstrated a larger amount of women (1 : 3). 90% of all the studied patients at the moment of examination were at home, while 33% were never admitted to hospitals. Among the studied contingent there was a high percentage of patients with a regressive development of the process and a stabilization with a tendency towards its obliviation. The study contains some data necessary for further investigations concerning the adaptational possibilities and physical state of these patients. The obtained information require correlations with data on the general population of this region in the same age periods.
