Phenomenological theory of ontogenesis.

In accordance to Prigogine-Wiame and phenomenological theories of ontogenesis, a continuous decreasing of specific entropy production measured by the intensity of heat production or respiration takes place during development, growth and aging. There are periods in the life of organisms when reverse processes occur: (initial stages of oogenesis, regeneration and malignant growth). The phenomenological theory of ontogenesis demonstrates that physical bases of individual development are characterized by two thermodynamic principles: minimum energy dissipation and fastest descent.

[Glycogen phosphorylase isozymes from chicken tissues and changes in the isozyme ratio during ontogenesis].

The isolation of isozymes Ib, IIIb and Lb of glycogen phosphorylase (EC 2.4.1.1) from chicken tissue is described. Isozymes Ib and IIIb have the same value of Km(G-1-P), i.e. 6.2 mM at 2 mM AMP but differ in A0.5(AMP). Isozyme Lb is characterized by S0.5(G-1-P) of 15 mM at 2 mM AMP and A0.5(AMP) of 600 muM at 20 mM G-1-P; for isozyme La these parameters are 3.7 mM and 20 muM, respectively. All the three isozymes reveal distinct immunochemical differences. In embryonic skeletal muscle the enzyme is represented by isozymes L and III up to the 15th way of embryogenesis; after the 17th day--only by isozyme III. In chicken liver the enzyme is represented only by isozyme L beginning with the 9th day of embryogenesis. At the beginning of tissue differentiation stage (4th day of embryogenesis) fetal tissues were found to contain isozymes L and IL.

[Immunodiffusion analysis of water-soluble rat bone marrow antigens].

Antisera were obtained against six electrophoretic fractions of the rat bone marrow extract. With their help, 18 tissular antigens and 11 antigens immunologically similar to the blood serum proteins were revealed in the rat bone marrow. All tissular antigens are divided in five groups by the degree of organ specificity: 1) bone marrow organospecific antigens (4 antigens), 2) antigens present in the bone marrow, spleen and lung extracts (2), 3) "granulocytic" antigens (4), 4) antigens common for many rat organs, but not found in the extracts of blood formed elements, skeletal muscle, heart, brain, eyes (3), 5) antigens present in all the organs studied (5). The bone marrow organospecific antigens may be specific antigens of hemopoietic cell precursors. The possibility of utilization of antisera against the bone marrow water soluble proteins for labelling hemopoietic cells of different lines of differentiation is discussed.

[Evolutionary bioenergetic trap and progressive evolution of animals].

We propose a macroscopic pathway to increase energy metabolism during progressive evolution with reducing size of animal body. If standard metabolism significantly increases in the course of body size reduction through increased coefficient b from the allometric equation (1), two cases are possible: coefficient b remains constant (1) or returns to the normal value (2) at increasing body weight in a given animal group. In the first case, an animal group appears in an evolutionary trap considering possible increase in body size, since the standard metabolism at increasing weight becomes lower starting from a certain point as compared to other animals of the same type. In the second case, increasing body size elevates standard metabolism relative to other animals of the same type, which offers an evolutionary advantage to this group.

[Statistical estimation of parameters in allometric equations].

An algorithm for estimating allometric coefficients widely used in biological studies is presented. The coefficients can be estimated only when the relationship between logarithms of the approximated data meets the linearity criterion. The proposed algorithm was applied for the brain-body weight relationship in mammals and oxygen consumption rate-body weight relationship in amphibians.

[Respiration rate and species-specific lifespan in fresh water bivalves of Margaritiferidae and Unionidae families].

We studied changes in the respiration rate in five species of freshwater bivalves as a function of animal age and size. The species-specific lifespan was calculated on the basis of the obtained data: Rubner's constant (Ru) and lifespan at standard temperature 20 degrees C (T20). The longest and shortest lifespan among the studied mollusks was specific for the pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera (Ru = 37 kJ and T20 = 36 years) and the freshwater mussel Anodonta anatina (Ru = 8 kJ and T20 = 8 years), respectively.

[Thermal compensation of respiration in pulmonate snails (Pulmonata) of Arion and Deroceras genera living in polar and temperate climatic zone].

Comparison of respiration rate in pulmonate snails living in various climatic zones demonstrated higher constant a in representatives of Arion genus (A. subfucus and A. fasciatus) from Polar Area (Murmansk Region) as compared to inhabitants of temperate latitudes (Moscow Region). The snails of Deroceras genus (D. reticulatum) from these two climatic zones were indistinguishable by relative standard metabolism. Different effects of climatic thermal conditions on respiration rates in representatives of these two snail genera can be due to their specific biology. Representatives of Deroceras genus are short-cycle synanthropic species, while the snails of Arion genus are long-cycle species living mostly in the forest zone.

[Age-related changes in oxygen consumption in the common mussel Mytilus edulis from the White Sea].

We determined the rate of oxygen consumption in the White Sea mussel Mytilus edulis of different ages. The rate of oxygen consumption proved to decrease with mussel age according to the equation: qO2 = 40.1/(1 - e(-0.194t)), where qO2 is respiration rate and t is age. Allometric coefficients of the oxygen consumption rate-soft tissue weight relationship were also determined.

[Comparative analysis of growth of edible mussel Mytilus edulis from different White Sea regions].

Growth properties were studied in edible mussel Mytilus edulis from different biotopes of the Kandalaksha Bay in the White Sea. Growth curves of the mussel shell were approximated by the von Bertalanffy equation. The highest growth rate, primarily dependent on hydrological conditions, was observed in mussels from the Chupa Bay (Levin Navolok fishery), while the lowest rate was observed in mussels from the Umba region (Turn Cape, Murmansk Region). Allometric relationships of the mussel shell were determined. Analysis of the relationship between the maximum width/convexity and their length demonstrated that this relationship is described by a single allometric equation for mussels from the Umba region, which indicates the homogeneity of this population. For mussels from the Chupa Bay, this relationship cannot be described by a single equation, which points to the population heterogeneity. For 90% mussels from this region, the shell width/convexity ratio ranged from 0.5 to 0.9; while for the remaining 10%, it ranged from 0.9 to 1.15.

[The rate of oxygen consumption during embryogenesis of Lymnaea stagnalis (Gastropoda)].

We studied the rate of oxygen consumption by the Lymnaea stagnalis embryos. The rate of oxygen consumption increased consistently during embryogenesis. The volume specific rate of oxygen consumption increased initially from the early cleavage stages until the gastrula stage and then decreased gradually to the eclosion of snails. There are three periods in embryogenesis of L. stagnalis, which differ in the coefficients of allometric dependence between the rate of oxygen consumption and volume of embryos: (1) early embryogenesis, when the increase in the rate of oxygen consumption is not accompanied by the growth of volume of the embryos; (2) larval period (trochophore and veliger stages; exponential coefficient k = 0.514), and (3) postlarval period (exponential coefficient k = 0.206).

[Equations describing changing of mass and intensity of oxygen consumption during post-embryonal animal development].

Equations fitting changing of mass and mass specific rate of oxygen consumption during post-embryonal animal development are deduced from formulae of thermodynamics of linear irreversible processes. Requirements of applicability of the equations as well as requirements allowing to reduce the growth equation to Bertalanffi's equation and changing of mass specific rate of oxygen consumption with body mass to allometric dependence are described.

[Retrospective analysis of influence of environmental conditions on growth parameters of White Sea edible mussels Mytilus edulis].

Retrospective analysis of influence of environmental conditions on growth parameters of White Sea edible mussels Mytilus edulis has been done by measurements of successive annual rings on shell surface. Analysis by non-linear criterion and Bertalanffy's growth equation allows to deduce that the best environmental condition for edible mussels growth was in 1999 (population from Kastyan island region) and in 2001 (population of Malaya Pir-guba region). The worst one was in 1998 for both populations.

[The parasite-host relationships between the glochidia of the European pearl oyster Margaritifera margaritifera (Margaritiferidae: Bivalvia) and mass fish species in the European north of the USSR].

Narrow specificity of larvae (glochidia) of Margaritifera margaritifera to salmon in the rivers of the Kola Peninsula was proved experimentally. It was found that in the gills of minnow, the other mass fish in the northern rivers of the USSR, larvae of M. margaritifera cannot develop and perish. Reasons causing the narrow specificity of M. margaritifera to Salmonidae are discussed.

[Existence of pre-CFU-S in the liver of mouse embryos].

Two types of CFU-s different in the size of their colonies have been found in the liver of 14 day old mice embryo. Statistic processing of the data allowed to prove that large spleen colonies are formed directly by CFU-s, whereas small colonies are formed by pre-CFU-s which undergo preliminary proliferation and only the stochastically differentiate into CFU-s. Approximate concentration of pre-CFU-s constitutes 2.67 per 10(5) embryo liver cells.

[Choice of fixatives for the immunohistochemical study of antigens using immunoadsorption].

The effect of fixatives on the rat bone marrow antigens was studied by a method combining immunoadsorption and immunodiffusion. This method allows to estimate rapidly and reliably the effect of fixation on immunochemical properties of the antigen under study, using polyvalence antisera. Acetone and ethanol proved to be the best fixatives for the rat bone marrow antigens since they preserved their immunochemical properties. Aldehydes (formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde) "inactivated" the bone marrow antigens.
