Alcoholism in San Francisco. A community study and recommended program.

In a community health council study of alcoholism in San Francisco it was suggested that alcoholism be considered a disease that afflicts an individual, affects his family, constitutes a major public health problem and produces social and economic disorder in the community. It is recommended that alcoholism, like many other diseases, be approached through a broad program of professional and public education, research into epidemiology and study of more effective methods of prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation, and that patient services commensurate with the scope of the problem be provided. Specific recommendations emphasized the role of the medical profession and related professions and facilities in the prevention and control of alcoholism.

California's alcoholic rehabilitation program; a preliminary report.

CONFRONTED BY THE MOST SERIOUS ALCOHOLISM PROBLEM IN THE UNITED STATES, CALIFORNIA HAS BEGUN AN EXTENSIVE REHABILITATION PROGRAM IN THREE CATEGORIES: Treatment and rehabilitation services; study and investigation; education, information and training. Treatment clinics operate in seven cities and it is proposed to help finance further facilities in communities interested in their local alcoholic problem. Grants to medical schools for improved personnel training are also proposed. Basic and clinical research and epidemiologic, sociologic and follow-up studies are in progress. Public education to the problems of alcoholism, stressing that it is an illness requiring treatment, is under way. This multi-faceted approach is expected to supply answers to many of the questions surrounding alcoholism.

The Short-Doyle Act; California community mental health services program: background and status after one year.

The Short-Doyle Act seeks to encourage the treatment of a patient suffering from a psychiatric disorder in his home community, with the assistance of local medical resources. One corollary of this program is the closer working together of the psychiatrist and the rest of the medical profession.A second goal of the act is the application of the public health principles to mental illnesses and mental retardation. Educational and consultative services provide implementation of these principles.

Psychosomatic problems in urology.

The intimate relationship between the urinary and genital systems permits stimuli in one system to influence the other. At least 15 per cent of women with symptoms of cystitis have no organic basis for their complaints. In psychiatric studies it has been noted that sexual conflict is the primary etiological factor in these patients. In some cases, continuance of the disorder leads to irreversible organic change. Urinary symptoms such as frequency, urgency, burning or retention are most common in women and become an automatic response to anxiety-provoking or sexual stimuli. In men, functional urinary symptoms are relatively infrequent. Often they indicate problems of genital dysfunction. Complaints of impotence, penile pain, testicular pain, or non-specific urethritis stem back to difficulties in their sexual lives. Many of the patients have symptoms of a generalized anxiety tension state due to sexual problems.A purely organic consideration of genitourinary disorders will lead to erroneous conclusions and unsatisfactory therapeutic results. The psychosomatic approach-that is, considering both physical and psychological aspects-will explain many hitherto difficult cases.
