Frequencies of serum antibodies to Helicobacter pylori CagA and VacA in a Turkish population with various gastroduodenal diseases.

Infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) strains secreting cytotoxin-associated gene A (CagA) and vacuolating cytotoxin A (VacA) proteins is associated with more severe gastroduodenal pathologies. However, this association varies among geographical regions and ethnic groups. We investigated the frequencies of antibodies to CagA and VacA proteins in 131 H. pylori-infected dyspeptic patients [40 duodenal ulcer (DU), 19 gastric ulcer (GU), 28 gastric cancer (GC), and 44 non-ulcer dyspepsia (NUD)] across 30 H. pylori-infected and endoscopically normal asymptomatic subjects (AS). Anti-CagA and anti-VacA antibodies were detected by Western blotting. The positivity rates of anti-CagA and anti-VacA antibodies were higher in patients with DU (92.5 and 75%), GU (89.5 and 84.2%) and GC (96.4 and 85.7%) than patients with NUD (70.5 and 50%) and AS (50 and 23.3%) (p < 0.05). CagA+ VacA+ phenotype was more frequent in patients with DU, GU and GC than patients with NUD and AS (75, 84.2, 85.7 vs. 47.7 and 20%, respectively) (p < 0.01). Our results showed that there is a significantly positive association between the presence of anti-CagA and anti-VacA antibodies and DU, GU and GC in our region.

An investigation of the factors that affect surgical hand disinfection with polyvidone iodine.

This study investigated the factors influencing the effectiveness of 7.5% polyvidone iodine as a surgical antiseptic. The study involved 100 operating staff (75 doctors and 25 nurses) from hospital surgical teams. Fingertips of both hands of the subjects were pressed on to agar culture before and after washing and after completion of surgery. Handwashing lasting for more than 3 min led to a significant decrease in the number of colonies compared with handwashing lasting for less than 3 min. Moreover, the number of colonies was significantly higher when surgery lasted for longer than 95 min. However, the handwashing style (with or without brushing) was not found to have a significant effect on the outcome of the disinfection procedure in terms of bacterial colonization. Subjects who had colonization of their hands after surgery were found to have significantly higher colony counts before handwashing compared with those who did not have any colonization on their hands after surgery. The results of this study revealed that in order to attain effective disinfection with polyvidone iodine, the duration of handwashing should be at least 3 min. The risk of recolonization increases when the duration of surgery exceeds 95 min.

Seasonal variability in behavioral despair in female rats.

Separate groups of female Wistar rats were tested every three months over a year to assess the extent of seasonal variability in the behavioral despair model of depression consisting of 2 swim tests separated by 24 h. There was a significant seasonal variability in the duration of immobility in the swim tests; duration of immobility was shorter in August and November than in February and May. These findings suggest reduced immobility and susceptibility to behavioral despair in summer and fall compared to winter and spring.

Natural radioactivity in the scale of water well pipes.

The natural radioactivity of 226Ra and 228Ra in scale samples taken from pipes used in several local water wells was investigated. The results showed 226Ra activities to be varying from 1284 to 3613 Bq/kg whereas, the 228Ra concentrations did not show any significant variation, all being low, below 30 Bq/kg. The 222Rn exhalations from these scale samples were also measured and compared with the 226Ra contents. The average ratio of 222Rn/226Ra was 31%. Chemical analyses showed that the main constituent of the scale samples was iron. The radiation dose rates from the pipes and scale were up to 100nSv/h. Although not a major hazard this could present a long-term risk if the scale materials were handled indiscriminately.

Fabrication and tests of 3He and 2H targets for beam polarization measurement

3He and 2H targets were fabricated through implantation of 3He and 2H ions in 0.2-0.3 mm thick tantalum and titanium foils. The energy of 3He and 2H ions was 45-100 and 78 keV, respectively. Ions beams with typical current of 90-300 microA were used for implantation. Stability tests of 3He and 2H targets were carried out by monitoring the yield of 3He(d, p)4He and 2H(d, p)3H reactions. For the 3He target, the reaction yield was stable for both tantalum and titanium foils but the most stabilized maximum yield was observed for the 100 keV tantalum target. In the case of 2H targets, the yield increased with increasing total dose implanted on the target.

Capsella bursa-pastoris (L.) Medic. as a biomonitor of heavy metals.

Capsella bursa-pastoris (L.) Medic. (shepherd's purse) has been tested as a possible biomonitor of heavy metals in the city of Bradford, UK and compared with Poa annua L. (annual meadow-grass), a species with a similar ecology that had previously been studied for biomonitoring potential. Forty-two sites (urban roadside, urban, urban park, suburban and rural) in and around Bradford were investigated. Concentrations of Pb, Cd, Zn and Cu have been determined in soils and in washed and unwashed plant leaves. Differences between the washed and unwashed samples, reflecting airborne and soil entry routes, respectively, varied according to the metal pollutant. There were significant relationships between the heavy metal concentration in samples of surface soil (depth 0-10 cm) and washed leaves, the concentrations being greater with progressively increased urbanisation of the sites. Capsella bursa-pastoris has been found to be a useful biomonitor of the four heavy metals studied, and it may be a particularly useful species since it could monitor short-term changes in pollution in urban areas.

Oxidative damage of erythrocyte membrane in nephrotic syndrome.

Erythrocytes are target cells for peroxidative damage. Abnormal susceptibility of erythrocyte lipids to peroxidation is believed to reflect a similar abnormality in other organs and tissues. The changes in erythrocyte lipid peroxidation [measured by malonyldialdehyde (MDA) concentration] and erythrocyte membrane cholesterol (EMC) and their correlation with plasma lipid changes were studied in 36 children with steroid-responsive minimal change nephrotic syndrome (MCNS) (16 in relapse, 20 in remission) and 30 matched healthy controls. Erythrocyte MDA levels were significantly higher in relapse [126.3+/-40.6 nmol/g hemoglobin (Hb)] compared with remission (101.2+/-21.3 nmol/g Hb, P<0.02) and in controls (95.4+/-20.4 nmol/g Hb, P<0.001). Plasma MDA levels in relapse were also higher than in remission (4.26+/-1.19 nmol/ml vs. 3.16+/-1.18 nmol/ml, P<0.01), and in controls (2.49+/-0.86 nmol/ml, P<0.001). The EMC content changed significantly during remission (1.22+/-0.15 mg/10(10) cells in relapse, 1.09+/-0.19 mg/10(10) cells in remission, P<0.04). These results show an increased sensitivity of red cells to lipid peroxidation in patients with steroid-sensitive nephrotic syndrome without the development of renal failure and anemia. Lipid peroxidation of plasma lipids and erythrocyte membrane may be a primary phenomenon, but this should be confirmed by investigation of peroxidation of renal lipids.

An epidemiological survey using the Treatment Priority Index (TPI).

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of malocclusion and to assess the need for orthodontic treatment among 6-10 year old Turkish primary school children. The Treatment Priority Index (TPI) was used to record and measure the malocclusions. The findings were that 40.38 per cent of the observed population showed normal occlusion, 21.85 per cent had minor manifestations of malocclusion and treatment need was slight, 25.17 per cent of the subjects showed definite malocclusion, 7.54 per cent had severe malocclusion and 5.06 per cent had a very severe handicap with a mandatory treatment requirement. Orthodontic treatment need increased between 6 and 10 years of age. No statistically significant difference was found between the mean TPI values of male and female subjects.

[Frankel III appliance].

FR III is a functional regulator appliance developed by Professor Rolf Frankel. This appliance is used in the treatment of Class III malocclusions. Optimum treatment results can be achieved when the appliance is used in the early mixed dentition period. The restricting effect of the buccinator and orbicularis oris muscles on maxillary skeletal development is prevented by means of lip pads and vestibular shields, thus maxillary development is stimulated. In this article philosophy, construction and clinical management of the FR III appliance will be described and two of our patients which are treated with this appliance will be presented.

Actions of amiloride analogues on prostacyclin synthesis by rat aortic rings.

1 Fresh rat aortic rings were incubated in HEPES-buffered salt solutions (pH 8.0) in the presence or absence of amiloride analogues. The effect of these drugs on prostacyclin (PGI2) synthesis was determined by radioimmunoassay of the stable hydrolysis product 6-oxo-prostaglandin (PG)F1 alpha. 2 Amiloride and phenamil (potent inhibitors of epithelial Na+ transport) had no significant effect on basal or Ca2+-stimulated PGI2 synthesis. 3 Several analogues previously reported to inhibit Na+/Ca2+ exchange caused a dose-related increase in 6-oxo-PGF1 alpha production in media containing NaCl 120 mM and CaCl2 2.5 mM. 2',3'-Benzobenzamil was the most potent analogue with a maximum stimulation of 4.51 +/- 0.89 fold, and an EC50 of 3 x 10(-5) M. 4 Amiloride analogues bearing substituents on the 5-amino group of the pyrazine ring have been reported to inhibit Na+/H+ exchange more potently than Na+/Ca2+ exchange. Three of these compounds inhibited Ca2+-stimulated 6-oxo-PGF1 alpha production at concentrations that did not significantly influence basal 6-oxo-PGF1 alpha production.

Interrelationship of dietary vitamin D3 with zinc and iron in young turkeys.

Three experiments were conducted with Large White turkeys to four weeks of age. The interrelationship of zinc and vitamin D3 was studied in two experiments. Iron and vitamin D3 were involved in one experiment. One group of ten male and one group of ten female poults were randomly assigned to each treatment within an experiment. All experiments involved a factorial arrangement of two dietary variables, D3 and either zinc or iron. For example, all possible combinations of four zinc levels; 31, 46, 76 and 106 p.p.m. and three vitamin D3 levels; 600, 1200, and 3600 I.C. units/kg. were fed in the second zinc experiment. Significant (P less than 0.05) weight gain differences occurred among both zinc and D3 levels in this experiment. Four week body weights were 356, 436, 459 and 444 g., respectively, for Zn levels; and 409, 410 and 452 g., respectively, for D3 levels. Significant (P less than 0.05) interactions occurred between dietary zinc and D3 levels, and between iron and D3 levels relative to body weight gain, Vitamin D3 tended to increase tibia zinc levels in poults receiving higher zinc levels; the opposite occurred with lower levels of the element. Zinc level in feces was decreased with vitamin D3. Hemoglobin level was not influenced by D3 but was increased by iron.

Influence of level, timing and duration of ronidazole water medication on histomoniasis in turkeys.

Levels of 20, 30, 40, 60 and 120 parts per million (p.p.m.) of ronidazole in water were evaluated for therapeutic efficacy against histomoniasis. Three experiments were conducted with Broad Breasted Bronze and/or Large White poults four to nine weeks old. All poults except the unexposed controls were each given approximately 70 or 100 embryonated Heterakis gallinae ova containing Histomonas meleagridis. Ronidazole medications were administered during the following post-exposure periods: 7-13, 7-17, 10-17, 10-20, 10-23, 10-26, 14-20 and 14-24 days. Histomoniasis mortality and lesions were recorded in each experiment during a 28 or a 35-day post-exposure period. Level of ronidazole, timing and duration of medication significantly affected efficacy. Treatments involving 30 to 40 p.p.m. (or more) of ronidazole, initiated 10 days post-exposure and continued for at least 7-10 days were most effective.

Prolonged effect of an anesthetic dose of ketamine on behavioral despair.

The present study investigated the effect of a single, anesthetic dose of ketamine, a noncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptor antagonist, on behavioral despair, an animal model of depression. Separate groups of male Wistar rats injected with an anesthetic dose of ketamine (160 mg/kg ip) and tested 3, 7, or 10 days later showed significantly less immobility in the second of two forced-swim tests compared to saline-injected controls. Ketamine- and saline-treated animals did not differ significantly in the swim tests with respect to other behavioral measures, namely diving, jumping, and head shakes. The present findings point to an ameliorative effect of ketamine on behavioral despair and support the view that NMDA antagonists may have a beneficial effect on depression.

Bilateral complete avulsion of ocular globes in a Le Fort III maxillofacial fracture: a case report and review of the literature.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate a case of bilateral complete avulsion of the globes following maxillofacial trauma. METHODS: A 23-year-old man with bilateral complete globe avulsion following a maxillofacial trauma. Both globes were luxated out of the orbit and suspended on the skin of the upper lid below the brows. No direct or indirect light reflexes or any eye movements could be noted. Computerized tomography showed complete lacerations of both optic nerves at a level just anterior to the optic canal. There were also multiple fractures corresponding to Le Fort III fracture with Le Fort II components. The brain parenchyma was normal with an exception of brain edema. As the globes were unsuitable for repositioning, both were enucleated. The maxillofacial fractures were immobilized with plates and screws. Although the patient gained consciousness with normal vital signs in the early postoperative period, he died on the ninth day due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection, despite invasive antibiotic treatment. DISCUSSION: The optic nerve and the globes are very resistant to mild and moderate trauma. The avulsion of the nerve at the canalicular or more posterior level may demonstrate central nervous system complications resulting in life-threatening conditions. The most critical issue in complete globe avulsions with a transected optic nerve is to rescue the vision. In total transected optic nerves the final eyes could only have had cosmetic benefits. In spite of promising experimental research on optic nerve regeneration, there are unknowns, such as the methods to eliminate the risk of anterior segment ischemia and phthisis bulbi. CONCLUSIONS: Globe avulsions with a complete optic nerve cut remain a challenging problem. More research is required to better understand the pathophysiology of optic nerve repair.
