The vascular anatomy of the dorsal part of the caudal ribs in the dog. A microangiographic study with special reference to the microvascular free transfer of living rib grafts.

The arterial blood supply to the head, neck and tubercle of the caudal ribs in the adult dog was studied by means of microangiography. While the tubercle and the neck are supplied solely by medullary branches of the main nutrient artery, the rib head receives an additional supply via two groups of epiphyseal arteries. This vascular pattern is discussed with special reference to the free microvascular transfer of composite posterior rib grafts.

Clinical and experimental experience in reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament.

Various methods for reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament have been described in the literature. In 1968 Broström et al. described a reconstruction using the medial third of the patellar ligament as a substitute for the cruciate ligament. (The operative procedure is described elsewhere in this book by Eriksson and has also been described by Alm and Gillquist.) The aim of the present investigation was to study the long term clinical results after reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament using the medial third of the patellar ligament. The clinical and morphological findings were correlated at various intervals after reconstruction of the ligament. The influence of the rotatory movement of the tibia on the tensile strength and on the elongation of the anterior cruciate ligament was studied experimentally. To clarify the vascular anatomy and morphology of the cruciate ligaments and to study the vascularization and fate of the transposed part of the patellar ligament, experimental surgery was performed in dogs.

The effect of stimulation of the cervical sympathetic chain on regional cerebral blood flow in monkeys. A study with radioactively labelled microspheres.

15 mum labelled microspheres were used to determine the effect of stimulation of the cervical sympathetic chain on blood flow through different parts of the brain and through some extracerebral tissues of the head in monkeys. Unilateral stimulation at 10 Hz for one min caused mean reductions in blood flow through the masseter muscle, the parotid gland, and the tongue of 76-94 percent in 9 monkeys, while in the same animals there were no convincing effects on regional cerebral blood flow.

Radioactively labelled microspheres in regional cerebral blood flow determinations. A study on monkeys with 15 and 35 mum spheres.

15 mum and 35 mum radioactive microspheres, differently labelled, were used simultaneously for rCBF-determinations in monkeys. Flow values calculated from data for 35 mum spheres were 27 +/- 7 g/min per 100 g higher for grey matter and 10 +/- 3 g/min per 100 g lower for white matter than flow values calculated from 15 mum spheres, while both sphere sizes resulted in similar values for the choroid plexus. A large number of 35 mum spheres were trapped in extracerebral pial arterioles. It is concluded that entrpment in relatively large arterioles of the 35 mum spheres explains the differences in flow values, and that this invalidates the use of 35 mum spheres, and larger, in rCBF-determinations.

Cystic adventitial degeneration of the popliteal artery. Report of a case.

A case of cystic adventitial degeneration of the popliteal artery is described. This is an unusual cause of intermittent claudication, but the diagnosis should be suspected in young persons, especially men, where the arteriogram shows a stenosis due to compression and arteriosclerotic changes are not demonstrable. A brief review of the literature on the condition, diagnosis, and treatment is given.
