Serological survey for avian paramyxoviruses from wildfowl in aquatic habitats in Andalusia.

A serological survey for a range of avian paramyxoviruses (PMV) was carried out among wildfowl from southern Spain, 1990 to 1992, using the hemagglutination inhibition technique. We collected 579 sera from 24 avian families (18 aquatic and six non-aquatic). Antibodies were detected to all paramyxoviruses in waterfowl, with a notable prevalence of antibodies to PMV-8 (43%) and to a lesser extent PMV-6 (21%). By contrast, in non-aquatic species high antibody prevalences were detected only to PMV-2 (60%), particularly in sparrows (68%), while antibody prevalences to other PMV's were moderate or low.

An indirect fluorescent antibody technique for detection of anti-Dermatophilus congolensis antibodies in sheep.

An indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) technique has been developed for detection of anti-Dermatophilus antibodies in sheep. Sera from 25 bacteriologically confirmed clinically affected sheep and from 10 negative non affected lambs were used. Whole cell antigen from brain heart infusion cultures of D. congolensis was used and all sera were tested in the same way for cross-reactivity against antigens obtained from cultures of Actinomyces viscosus, Micrococcus luteus, Nocardia asteroides, and Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. Sera from Dermatophilus-infected sheep gave positive results with D. congolensis antigen and negative results with the antigens from other bacteria. The whole cell antigens employed were simple to prepare and easy to recognise by microscopy. Cross-reactivity was further tested using the D. congolensis culture whole cell antigen and 3 sera from sheep with bacteriologically confirmed natural infections due to Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, Actinomyces pyogenes and Nocardia asteroides. None of these sera showed positive reactions. The authors recommend this technique for serological surveys and research on dermatophilosis.

Prevalence of antibodies to different Leptospira interrogans serovars in pigs on large farms.

A seroepidemiological survey was carried out in the province of Badajoz (south-western Spain) in order to determine the presence and spread of Leptospira interrogans. The 521 sera tested were drawn from breeding sows on 28 large farms (15 with fewer than 60 and 13 with over 60 breeders). Immunological testing was performed using the Martin-Pettit micro-agglutination technique. Pigs with titres equal to or greater than 1:100 were considered positive. Haemolysed and/or contaminated test sera were reprocessed following filter-paper treatment. A total of 10.56% of pigs tested proved positive, 39.28% of farms being affected. The following L. interrogans serovars were detected: pomona (6.53%), castellonis (1.15%), sejroe (1.15%), grippotyphosa (0.96%), australis (0.38%), hebdomadis (0.19%) and icterohaemorrhagiae (0.19%).

Susceptibility of Streptococcus suis to various antimicrobial agents.

A study was performed to determine the susceptibility of 59 S. suis strains, isolated from sick and healthy carrier swine, to a range of antimicrobial agents. The beta-lactamic group proved more active both in Kirby-Bauer and MCI tests. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole emerged as an alternative drug in chemoprevention and treatment of S. suis infections.

Identification of Streptococcus suis isolated from swine: proposal for biochemical parameters.

A study was made of the biochemical profiles of 59 strains serotyped as Streptococcus suis, isolated from diseased and clinically healthy pigs. The following parameters are proposed for the identification of the species: Voges-Proskauer negativity, hydrolysis of esculin positivity, trehalose positivity, negativity for growth in 6.5% NaCl, and absence of beta-hemolysis on sheep blood agar. S. suis serotype 2 is negative for hippurate, pyrrolidonylarylamidase, and mannose.

Enzymatic activities of Dermatophilus congolensis measured by API ZYM.

API ZYM kit was used to test enzymatic activities on eighteen strains of Dermatophilus congolensis. All strains produced lipase and acid phosphatase, which act on lipids, and leucine arylamidase which act on proteins. Another 10 exoenzymes were present in at least one of the strains.

Peritonitis due to rupture of retroperitoneal teratoma: computed tomography diagnosis.

Retroperitoneal benign cystic teratoma is relatively rare in adults. We report a case of traumatic rupture of primary retroperitoneal teratoma into peritoneum that produced chemical peritonitis. It was demonstrated by computed tomography, which showed fat-fluid levels in the peritoneum. We suggest that the demonstration of fat-fluid levels in the peritoneum could be a reliable sign of intraperitoneal rupture of abdominal teratoma and subsequent chemical peritonitis.

Para-oesophageal synovial sarcoma.

An unusual case of mediastinal synovial sarcoma with secondary invasion of the oesophagus simulating an intra-oesophageal mass is reported. The location and radiological appearance of this tumour are exceptional, and, to the authors' knowledge, have not been reported previously.

Primary adenocarcinoma of the terminal ileum simulating Crohn's disease.

An unusual case of histologically proven ileal adenocarcinoma mimicking regional enteritis in a 22-year-old man is reported. Although in 2 previous reports the patient's age was stressed as an important factor for the differential diagnosis, this was not of diagnostic help in our case. This report emphasizes the need to include other diagnostic possibilities when regional enteritis has an anomalous evolution and responds poorly to treatment.

Treatment of infected tibial pseudarthrosis by external fixation with the Wagner device.

We analyzed our experience with infected tibial pseudoarthrosis which resulted in a therapeutic plan for a radical operation or a step-by-step method, depending on the type of pseudarthrosis (PS), the severity of the infection, and the skin damage. We think that external fixation with the Wagner device is the procedure of choice. Owing to its simplicity and good stability, it is possible to treat the PS and the infection and to obtain good final results.

[The influence of age on the end-results of the total surgical replacement of the hip].

A revision of the first 700 total hip prostheses (operated on in the period 1969-1980) is carried out with the purpose to establish the influence of the age on the evolution of the arthroplasty. The results are very satisfactory but it is younger patients that complications related to loosening are more frequent. This fact can be explained by a longer period of evolution and a major prosthetic stress in these patients. By this reason, we do not use actually cement to fix the implants in those patients younger than sixty.
