[Skin graft protection by treatment of recipients with ultraviolet irradiated fragments of the donor spleen].

We have tested de possible protective effects of UVA radiated spleen fragments upon simultaneous skin allografts in 84 rats. Under these circumstances skin graft rejection was less evident with a 20 day graft disappearance rate of 46.87% rate in the treated series, that compares favourably with a 80% in the control series. This study shows a parallel increase in the mean survival time of skin grafts in treated specimens. The figures being 19.8 days in the treated series against 12.9 days in untreated controls. Spleen implants are finally shown to produce a healing stimulus in the skin graft zone. These differences are statistically significant.

[Undescended testicle treated with FSH and HCG].

Medical treatment with FSH and HCG was tested during 21 days in 47 cases (76 testis) of undescended testis. The average testis size, as measured by ecography, increased from 0.828 cc to 1.57 cc 48 hours after completing the treatment. Three months later the average testis size was 1.025 cc and 1.24 cc at six months. FSH increased slightly and total testosterone and free testosterone increased significantly. After treatment, 68% of the previously undescended testis descended.

[Effect of alloxan-induced diabetes on hepatic regeneration].

Hepatic regeneration in alloxan-induced diabetic rats that underwent a 70% hepatectomy was compared to that of a series of non-treated rats. In diabetic rats, hepatic regeneration is lower and the liver reaches only 70% of the original weight ten days after hepatectomy. Analytical studies in these rats show a diminution of insulin and glucagon. Hepatic microcirculation as shown by measurements of CLV-CLV and CLV area undergoes changes which evolve at a different rate in the central and peripheral zones of the liver. These findings as well as the diminished hepatic regeneration may be attributed to the diminution of the insulin and glucagon values. Insulin and glucagon may be responsible for hepatic regeneration.

[Behavior of vascularization during hepatic regeneration].

In this work, out of 185 rats 120 underwent hepatectomy of 70%. Studies carried out by microradiography and Spalteholz transparence method prove that during the first days after hepatectomy the ratio hepatic parenchyma/vascular texture is increased; this fact comes to be maximal four days after, becoming stabilized toward ten days after. Studies done by Ibas I imaging analyzer in hepatic sections of rats which underwent hepatectomy as compared to those which underwent laparatomy only, show that ratio LCV-LCV, as well as areas and area form of hepatic sanguineous vessels are changing, in the first ones, in a rhythmical way including two phases of greater activity. These variations are evolved, in a different way, in the central zone than in the peripherical one of liver. We try to relate these facts to vascular and humoural theories which explain hepatic regeneration.

[A giant abdominoscrotal hydrocele].

The authors describe the case of a 3.5 years old boy with abdominoscrotal hydrocele. The abdominal mass increase in the last days with abdominal pain symptoms and, in the operation, they found nonspecific reaction of the appendix and lymph nodes in the ileocecal zone. A review of the literature is made.

[Chronology of the surgical repair of inguinal hernia in children].

We have made a revision of 243 cases of inguinal hernia operated in Children Surgery Department of the Military Hospital Gómez Ulla during five years. The conclusion of this work was that once the diagnostic is true the patient must be operated as soon as possible (two weeks). It should be dedicated special attention in case of previous crisis of hernia incarceration and when the symptoms are constipation, frequent cough, phimosis, constant irritability or others process with sudden increase of intraabdominal pressure. There is a description of "distension of intestinal as a sign", which exist in 11,11% of the preoperative studies, and "stomach chamber sign" present in 6,58%, both of them needs treatment as soon as possible. The 6,9% of the patients required a second operation because a new hernia in the contralateral side. We think about unjustified the bilateral systematic surgical exploration.

[Selective autotransplant of the spleen. An experimental study].

A study was carried out on 40 dogs. Four groups of ten dogs each were established. A laparotomy group, a simple splenectomy group and two groups which underwent a selective autotransplant of the medium an deep layers of a centrifugated solution of splenic medulla respectively. Immunisation with BSA showed that humoral immune response with formation of anti-BSA antibodies is more intense in the control group which underwent laparotomy than in the splenectomised group. The response obtained in dogs subjected to autotransplant of deep layer is almost identical to that of the control group while that of the medium layer showed a slightly lower response. Cellular immune response is more accentuated in the group which underwent autotransplant from the deep layer, while those from the medium layer showed a higher response than that of the splenectomised group.

[Humoral immune response after splenic experimental autotransplantation in the dog (author's transl)].

Primary and secondary humoral immune responses were studied in a group of 40 dogs after splenectomy and two types of splenic autotransplantation. The results enable the authors to conclude that splenectomy alone induces a depletion of immunoglobulins which is statistically significant. On the other hand, both types of autotransplantation made possible the maintenance of normal levels of anti-BSA antibodies. When autotransplantation was performed in the abdominal rectus muscle there was an enhancement of the primary immune response. The authors advise this procedure in all splenectomies for trauma in the first five years of life.
