[Natural killer cells and T-suppressors in patients with chronic gastritis].

In of 69 patients suffering chronic gastritis, 23 contracting gastritis in old age and 10 with gastritis aggravated by stomach ulcers, a significantly low level of natural killers was found in cases of mucosal atrophy and gastric intestinal metaplastic lesions, particularly, at an age of more than 60 years. T-suppressor level was relatively lower in patients with atrophic gastritis.

[Secretory immunoglobulin of the stomach in patients with chronic gastritis].

The determination of the level of secretory IgA by a method of radial immunodiffusion after Mancini in the gastric juice of 48 patients with chronic gastritis in correlation with the status of the gastric mucosa, the level of acidification and the phase of exacerbation has shown diagnostic potentialities of the method. The highest IgA level was detected in patients with "rearrangement" gastritis and in patients with sharply suppressed gastric secretion. In marked atrophy of the gastric mucosa IgA secretion was significantly lowered. The period of remission was attended by a decrease in IgA secretion as compared with the phase of exacerbation.

[Treatment of chronic gastritis patients with sodium nucleinate].

The efficacy of sodium nucleinate was studied and compared with routine agents and prednisolone in the treatment of patients afflicted with chronic gastritis. Three similar groups of 30 patients were entered into the study. The treatment with sodium nucleinate permitted the attainment of a remission in the majority of the patients. In 93.3% of the patients the remission lasted over 3 months and was marked by a significant rise of basal and stimulated gastric secretion as well as by the immunomodulating effects in the form of an augmentation of the number of T suppressors and a decrease in the number of T lymphocytes capable of inhibiting leukocyte migration on interaction with the gastric antigen.

Autoimmune Diseases↗

[Characteristics of antitumor immunity in different forms of chronic gastritis].

Patients with stomach cancer, primary chronic gastritis (with intestine-type metaplasia of mucosa), old-age gastritis, post-resection gastritis, B12-deficiency-induced gastritis, stomach ulcer and chronic non-specific diseases of the lungs revealed a high sensitization to stomach cancer antigens matched by a low one to antigens of unaltered mucosa of the stomach. Patients with malignancies at sites other than the stomach, morphological patterns of gastritis as well as cases of primary chronic gastritis unaccompanied by intestinal metaplasia showed a reverse correlation: a high activity of T-lymphocytes with respect to unaltered gastric mucosa antigens and a low one--to stomach cancer antigens. An immunologic test using stomach and tumor antigens for screening of those at high risk for stomach cancer is suggested.

[Immunopathology of chronic gastritis in B12-deficiency anemia].

Twenty-one patients with B12-deficiency anemia and 72 patients with independent primary chronic gastritis were examined. The patients with B12-deficiency anemia showed a considerably elevated level of circulating antibodies as regards gastric antigen. During interaction of antibodies and antigen, an increased quantity of endogenous complement was found to be consumed. Using the immunofluorescence technique antibodies to the coating cells of the stomach were detected in 47.6% of anemic patients. During gastritis associated with B12-deficiency, there was a higher level of intragastric immune complexes as compared with both normal subjects and patients with primary chronic gastritis. The characteristics of circulating immune complexes did not deviate from normal in all groups of patients. The patients with B12-deficiency anemia manifested a high degree of sensitization of T lymphocytes to gastric mucosa antigen. However, it was less pronounced than that in patients with primary chronic gastritis.
