Umbilical vein grafts and PTFE grafts for femoro-popliteal bypass. Preliminary results.

This retrospective, multiple-center study includes 172 PTFE (Gore-Tex) and 35 umbilical vein grafts (Bio-graft) used for femoro-popliteal bypass grafting. The one-year patency rate was approximately 63% in both groups. Until further experience is accumulated, autogenous saphenous vein should probably be the first choice for femoro-popliteal bypass grafting. Prosthetic grafts should preferably be used when the saphenous vein is absent or insufficient.

Umbilical hernia with duodenal obstruction.

The duodenum and pylorus were found to be strangulated within the hernial sac in a case with an incarcerated umbilical hernia. Case history and pathophysiological mechanism are discussed.

Combined tinidazole and doxycycline prophylaxis in colorectal surgery. An interhospital trial.

There were no significant differences between randomized groups on either preoperative tinidazole or placebo added to pre-, per, and postoperative doxycycline. Cases of anaerobic infection among the placebos patients as well as a general trend of the parameters studied suggest that tinidazole gives added protection, i.e. that antibiotic prophylaxis should also comprise anaerobic microbes.

Elimination of ingested 32P-labelled E. coli from rat polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN). Evaluation of a method.

A method to be used for in vitro assay of the elimination of ingested 32P-labelled E. coli from rat PMN monolayers has been evaluated. The rate of expulsion of bacterial label from phagocytes into the extracellular medium was found to range between 40 and 50% of the total uptake 180 min after termination of ingestion. Serum enhanced the cellular uptake of bacteria, but did not affect the rate of elimination. Disintegration of the phagocytes was not found to be a problem.

Influence of hydrocortisone on uptake and elimination of 32P-labelled E. coli by rat polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) in vitro.

Hydrocortisone was tested for inhibition of uptake and of elimination of E. coli by monolayers of rat peritoneal PMN. 32P was used as label of the bacteria and their degradation products eliminated from the phagocytes. The cellular uptake was reduced by hydrocortisone (1-2 mg per ml) both in the presence and absence of serum, while the elimination of bacterial label was reduced by 0.5 mg per ml and higher concentrations of the drug.

Influence of methylprednisolone on complement activity in germfree rats and on antibody activity to Escherichia coli in monocontaminated rats.

By means of radio-isotope technique, the influence of methylprednisolone treatment on opsonic and bactericidal serum activities against E. coli was studied on germfree and monocontaminated rats. Based on the present results it seems unlikely that methylprednisolone impairs the production of complement components. A slight suppression of antibody activity was only found in markedly wasted monocontaminated rats treated with very high doses of methylprednisolone from the day before contamination.
