Effect of calcitonin on fracture healing in rats.

The influence of calcitonin on the healing of a fracture of tibial diaphysis in young rats has been studied with the aid of 85Sr investigations. The animals were subdivided into four groups (with facture + calcitonin, with fracture and no calcitonin, without fracture but with calcitonin treatment and intact controls). During the experimental period up to the day 38, repeated applications of calcitonin and 85Sr along with measurements of different parameters followed. These parameters consisted of: total body weights, 85Sr contents in the fractured and opposite tibiae, total body radioactivity of 85Sr, the weights of dried bones dissected after the day 38, the weights of bone ashes and the specific activity of 85Sr in the ashes. Increased 85Sr-uptake was seen as a sign of increased mineralisation of the callus. Calcitonin suppressed the resorption of bone during the callus formation and enhanced the mineralisation of callus to some extent. The main influence of calcitonin was seen to reduce the whole-body metabolic response to a localized skeletal injury--the fracture. The possible importance of this finding for the clinical practice is discussed briefly.

Effect of short-term removal of infant rats from the female on lactation.

Removal of the young for a single period of at least 12 hours at the age of 15 days led to a marked increase in 85Sr retention in the maternal organisms and to a decrease in its transfer to the young in the milk. Study of 85Sr transfer in the milk showed that, if the litter was completely changed on the 16th day after birth, the female immediately accepted foster young. Repeated removal of the young on the 14th day and 15th day of life for a length of time which had no effect in a single removal likewise led to a decrease in 85Sr transfer in the milk and to raise 85Sr retention in the female. The gradual decrease which occurs in lactation during the weaning period is probably caused by diminution of the suckling stimulus on the part of the young, as they lose their physical dependence on the female.

Alkali and acid burns of the rabbit eye: uptake of intravenously injected Na125I and Na131I into the cornea and iris.

Rabbit eyes were burned either with 1 N sodium hydroxide or 1 N hydrochloric acid. In a previous part of the study (Obenberger and Babický, 1974) authors measured the aqueous flow using intravenous injections of Na125I and Na 131I. In the present study the uptake of iodine into the cornea and iris is investigated in the same eyes. Caustic injuries of both types initially cause changes in the specific activity of the aqueous affecting the uptake of iodine into the examined tissues.

Alkali and acid burns of the rabbit eye: measurement of aqueous flow by means of intravenously injected Na-125 I and Na-131I.

Rabbit eyes were burned either with 1N NaOH or 1 N HC1. On the fifth day following the injury, aqueous humour flow was determined according to a method originally described by Becker (1962), using intravenous injection of Na-125I and Na-131I in different time intervals. In alkali-burned eyes the main finding was stoppage of the aqueous humour flow, probably due to obstruction of outflow channels. In acid-burned eyes the significantly elevated diffusion out of the eye was probably caused by altered function of the highly irritated and hyperemic iris. Results confirmed the previous findings achieved by the rate of disappearence of 14-C-glucose injected into the anterior chamber of the burned eyes.

[Bone calcium metabolism following local x-irradiation. XIII. Effect of castration and estrogens on the general response of male rats].

The course of local and general deviations in osseous tissue of locally irradiated male white rats is different in hormonally not influenced and in castrated animals. By castration, both the intensity and the variations of this response are inhibited whereas especially the second osseous tissue shows a great deal more sensitivity. The male sex hormones thus lead to a certain instability and intensity of the defence reactions against local radiation damage which derail more easily than in females.

[Metabolism of calcium in bones following local x-irradiation. 14. Effect of castration and estrogens on the general response].

The female sex hormones cause a moderation of the local and general metabolic response to local irradiation of an extremity in female white rats. After castration in adult age, therefore, a more intense reaction is observed with more distinctly marked changes of the 45Ca-incorporation. In male rats, consequently, there is a more vivid course of general response. In these, castration contrarily brings about a moderation of the general response.

Maternal milk intake by infant rats temporarily denied acces to other food sources.

The onset of the weaning period for infant rats was artificially postponed to the 24th day of life by denying the young access to solid food and/or water. Study of 85-Sr transfer in the maternal milk showed that the artificial shift in the initiation of weaning did not influence the time of its termination. The weaning period, defined as the time between the first intake of solid food and the last intake of maternal milk, was shortened to about 4 days in these young. We also found that the young did not compensate the lack of solid food by a higher maternal milk intake, but that they tried to do so by drinking more water.
