Modified sector-integration method for predicting the output factors of electron beams including extended source to surface distance.

A modified sector-integration method is presented that can predict the output factors of irregular shaped electron fields even in the case of extended source to surface distance (SSD). The model takes as input measured output factors for circular inserts of various radii. These circular fields were measured at SSDs of 100, 105 and 110 cm to determine the effective source distance as a function of radius (ESD(r)). For an arbitrary electron field at any SSD, the shape is divided into small sectors, and the contribution calculated from the radius and ESD(r). The calculated output factors were verified by direct measurements of various types of electron fields mainly based on clinical use. The energies modelled were 8, 10 and 12 MeV for applicator sizes of 10 cm x 10 cm and 14 cm x 14 cm (defined at 95 cm). The calculated values agreed with the measured data within 1% for the various rectangular cutouts including extended source to surface distance. We retrospectively modelled 97 patient inserts of irregular shape, and found agreement within 2% of measured values.

[Inhibin and ovarian cancer].

Previous observations from our laboratory have demonstrated that the levels of immunoreactive inhibin (ir-inh) are elevated in almost all patients with granulosa cell tumors and in the majority of postmenopausal women with mucinous ovarian cancers. The present report confirms these findings in a larger group of post-menopausal women. Immunohistochemistry for the inhibin alpha. beta A and beta B sununits shows predominantly epithelial staining in granulosa cell tumors and in the majority of mucinous cancers. Serous cystadenocarcinomas also frequently show positive staining. Studies seeking to identify G alpha i-2 or FSH receptor mutations have provided negative results in contrast to other reports. Further studies of the roles of the inhibin-related family of peptides in ovarian cancer diagnosis and monitoring are clearly indicated.

A summary of the recommendations for smoking cessation interventions: the quality assurance in the treatment of drug dependence project.

This report presents outlines for approaches to smoking cessation. These recommendations are based on a meta-analysis of the treatment-outcome literature, a survey of current treatment practices and the views of a panel of experts. Face-to-face intervention to assist smokers to stop smoking needs to be considered in the context of a public policy approach to reducing the prevalence of smoking. The nature of face-to-face interventions is determined by the time available to practitioners. Where there is no time to intervene (e.g. in some primary health care settings) quality self-help materials should be prominently displayed. Where there is only 10 minutes or less, attention should be focused on personalizing the health effects of smoking, providing firm advice to quit, providing self-help material, setting a quit date (if appropriate), identifying social support for cessation and organizing a follow-up visit. If there is more time to intervene (up to one hour) the previous techniques can be expanded on and supplemented with nicotine replacement and discussion of methods for dealing with high-risk situations. Longer interventions would use all of these methods, presenting them in more detail, and may also address stress management and minimization of weight gain.

Antigen changes during spore formation in Bacillus cereus.

Baillie, Ann (University of Glasgow, Glasgow, Scotland), and John R. Norris. Antigen changes during spore formation in Bacillus cereus. J. Bacteriol. 87:1221-1226. 1964.-Ultrasonic extracts of Bacillus cereus cells harvested at different stages in spore formation were analyzed by immunoelectrophoresis with antisera prepared by injecting similar extracts into rabbits. Seven antigens resistant to heating at 80 C for 10 min were detected in extracts of young vegetative cells, and there were at least eight additional thermolabile antigens present at this stage. During spore formation, many of the thermolabile antigens disappeared from the cells and new antigens could be detected. Mature spores contained four of the heat-resistant antigens present in young vegetative cells and an additional five heat-resistant antigens. Only three thermolabile antigens were detected in spore extracts.
