Identification of two compounds correlated with lack of rooting capacity of chestnut cuttings.

Cuttings from mature chestnut (Castanea spp.) trees are very difficult to root, whereas juvenile or etiolated cuttings root easily. The HPLC chromatograms from mature cuttings consistently showed two well-defined peaks that were absent from juvenile or etiolated cuttings. The compounds responsible for these two peaks were isolated and identified as derivatives of ellagic acid, 3,3',4-tri-O-methylellagic acid (compound 1) and 3,4,4'-tri-O-methylellagic acid (compound II). Compound I significantly inhibited rooting as measured by the bean test; a concentration of 3.0 x 10(-5) M caused a 32% inhibition in number of roots formed compared with controls grown in 10(-5) M IAA. When compound I was mixed with an equal quantity of IAA, the rooting activity of the auxin was reduced by 31.5%. An insufficient amount of compound II was available for the bean assay.

Reassessment of electrovectorcardiographic signs of left atrial enlargement.

Echocardiographic left atrial size was correlated with 27 electrovectorcardiographic parameters in 93 subjects. In 20 of them hemodynamic studies, including calculation of the left atrial volume, were performed. Subjects were divided into four groups as follows: Group I, 21 healthy subjects; group II, 45 patients with heart disease but no left atrial enlargement; group III, 15 patients with heart disease and left atrial size from 4.1 to 5 cm; and group IV, 12 patients with heart disease and a left atrial size exceeding 5 cm. A good correlation was found between left atrial size and the following parameters: Duration of P wave in standard lead II, voltage of both terminal forces of P wave in lead V1 and its maximal vector in the frontal and sagittal planes. A new index (duration/voltage of P wave in lead II) was postulated, which showed an excellent correlation with left atrial size (p less than 0.001). In all cases the superposition between groups was excessive. These findings indicate the limitations of the classical patterns and raise interest in new parameters concerning the electrocardiographic diagnosis of left atrial enlargement.

Biosorption with algae: a statistical review.

The state of the art in the field of biosorption using algae as biomass is reviewed. The available data of maximum sorption uptake (qmax) and biomass-metal affinity (b) for Cd2 +, Cu2 +, Ni2 +, Pb2 + and Zn2 + were statistically analyzed using 37 different algae (20 brown algae, 9 red algae and 8 green algae). Metal biosorption research with algae has used mainly brown algae in pursuit of treatments, which improve its sorption uptake. The information available in connection with multimetallic systems is very poor. Values of qmax were close to 1 mmol/g for copper and lead and smaller for the other metals. Metal recovery performance was worse for nickel and zinc, but the number of samples for zinc was very small. All the metals except lead present a similar affinity for brown algae. The difference in the behavior of lead may be due to a different uptake mechanism. Brown algae stand out as very good biosorbents of heavy metals. The best performer for metal biosorption is lead.

[The functional effect of internal carotid TEA on ocular hemodynamics].

Fifteen patients with a stenosis of the internal carotid artery superior than a 70% were studied in order to analyze the effects of TEA on the ocular hemodynamics. Analysis was made by ophthalmodynamography and electrofunctional studies. An improvement of the ocular hemodynamics was found, particularly by ophthalmodynamography and visual evoked potentials.

[Usefulness of a morbidity registry for service planning and assessment of quality of care].

BACKGROUND: Objective. 1. To know the primary and secondary chief complaints. 2. To obtain health problems incidence and prevalence rates of the population attended. 3. To evaluate the usefulness of a selective morbidity registry, of certain complaints in order to elaborate assistance quality indicators. METHODS DESIGN: Descriptive cross-sectional study. Site: Health urban center (Nazaret, Valencia) for primary assistance. PARTICIPANTS: Randomized sample of patients attended during a year (n = 2898). Age, sex and case history number were recorded as well as whether the complaint was chief, secondary, new or known. RESULTS: Among all the problems recorded, the bureaucratic ones (prescriptions) accounted for 11.6% (IC95%: 4.3 +/- 12.8), working disability certificates due to health being 5.1% (IC95%: 4.3 +/- 5.9). Among the patients attended there was an incidence rate of 10(5) year patients in the acute respiratory infections of 12584.3, acute bronchitis was 2516.8 showing the highest prevalence those regarding administrative sources and attention of chronic pathologies. CONCLUSIONS: A morbidity record with the characteristics mentioned leads to the knowledge of the problems of the population attended and to assess some aspects of assistance quality (disease cases avoidable by vaccine, assistance administrative charge, health training activities during the consult ...), especially when these sampling are performed periodically.

[The fibrinolytic treatment with urokinase of acute arterial thrombosis].

We present our experiences on 86 patients with acute arterial thrombosis of the legs, undergoing a fibrinolytic treatment with urokinase. Results from the treatment are analyzed according to: the administration way (systemic, locoregional, intrathrombotic), the level of thrombosis (upper or lower legs), the associated morbidity and mortality.
