Incidence of residual levels of organophosphorus insecticides in farm produce in the Region of Murcia, Spain. Comparison of intake in the 1985-86 and 1989 campaigns.

We calculated the effective dietary exposure to 20 organophosphorus insecticides in a sample of residents of the Region of Murcia (Spain). Calculations were based on the contamination of 2310 specimens of citrus fruits, pitted and seedy fruits and vegetables collected in the 1985-86 and 1989 campaigns. A comparison of the results from the two campaigns showed that the mean annual insecticide ingestion determined from the mean consumption of each type of farm produce fell from 7.82 mg to 5.55 mg over the 4-year period studied. The total annual ingestion of insecticides during the 1985-86 and 1989 campaigns was ca. 0.133 and 0.1 mg kg-1 body weight; these values are well below the admissible annual ingestion of 29.565 mg kg-1 body weight.

[Hypertrophy of the masseter: a rare case associated with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy].

Masseteric hypertrophy is a rare, monolateral or bilateral lesion. The aetiology is often unknown and both congenital and acquired forms are reported in the literature. The authors report a case of masseteric hypertrophy associated with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Family history shows two brothers suffering from the same cardiac disease. Echography, computed tomography, EMG test and aspiration biopsy of masseteric muscle were performed. Echocardiography and HLA, B and C antigens of 16 relatives were also performed. In the report case the authors hypothesized a multifactorial background on a genetic basis.

[Hypertensive encephalopathy: contribution of magnetic resonance].

We report a patient with hypertensive encephalopathy and we analyze his clinical and neurological imaging peculiarities. Computed tomography showed hypodense corticosubcortical lesions, whereas magnetic resonance scan disclosed extensive, wholly reversible enhanced signal lesions due to cerebral edema.

Role of growth hormone-releasing hormone on pentagastrin-induced growth hormone release in normal subjects.

In order to investigate the mechanisms by which gastrin cause GH release in humans we measured the GH response to pentagastrin alone (1.5 micrograms/kg/hour from 120 to 210 min) and following pretreatment with GHRH (GHRH 1-29,250 micrograms, iv at 0 min) in normal male subjects. Prior GHRH administration abolished the GH response to the second bolus of GHRH (1 micrograms/kg) administered two hours later. Pentagastrin infusion induced a rise in GH levels maximal at 60 min (9.1 + 0.6 ng/ml, mean + SE), but this rise was abolished by pretreatment with GHRH. Finally, we found that gastrin did not modify basal GH release or GH responses to GHRH by rat anterior pituitary cells in monolayer culture. Taken together, these data suggest that gastrin regulates GH secretion by acting at hypothalamic level.

Disappearance of bromopropylate residues in artichokes, strawberries and beans.

Residues of Bromopropylate were determine in artichokes, strawberries and beans after foliar spray of acaricide at two rates. The rates used were 1 g/l formulated product (normal recommended) and 1.5 g/l. The residue levels of bromopropylate in the three crops after 14 days were lower than 0.7 ppm and did not exceed the Maximum Residual Level (MRL) recommended by FAO. In the artichokes and strawberries, the total concentration of residues decreased by 50% of the initial level after 2-3 days. Only trace levels of the bromopropylate residues (less than 0.01 ppm) were detected in the "hearts" of the artichokes. Bromopropylate residues in the green beans were also less than 0.8 ppm after the first day of foliar spraying. The kinetic of degradation occurred in two different steps. In the first step (4-6 days) the dissipation of bromopropylate was faster whereas in the second step (7-14 days) the loss of residues was much slower.

Cavernomas of the central nervous system: clinical and neuroimaging manifestations in 47 patients.

Forty seven cases of central nervous system cavernous angioma (21 males and 26 females) are described. The main clinical signs were epilepsy and brainstem syndromes. Digital subtraction intra-arterial angiography, when used, failed to reveal cavernoma. CT detected many of the lesions, but the most successful supplementary diagnostic procedure was MRI which produces highly characteristic images of cavernous angioma. The diagnosis of cavernous angioma was confirmed in the 18 cases in which the tumour was removed surgically.

Lack of pancreatic maldigestion in atopic dermatitis.

Twenty adult patients affected by atopic dermatitis (AD) were submitted to the p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) test in order to evaluate the proteolytic pancreatic function. All but one showed a normal PABA test. These results seem to exclude a proteolytic maldigestion as a pathogenetic factor in AD.

Intestinal permeability in patients with atopic eczema.

Passive intestinal permeability was measured in 15 adult patients with atopic eczema. Values in the patients did not differ significantly from those in 12 healthy control subjects. These results suggest that altered intestinal permeability is not important in the pathogenesis of atopic eczema in adults.

Persistence of the mixture of chlorfenvinphos and cypermethrin (Survan) in citrus fruits.

The Survan (a mixture of the insecticides chlorfenvinphos and cypermethrin) persistence in lemon citrus fruits, verna variety, is studied. In all the cases, residues of both compounds have been detected in the juices of the fruits treated. When the mixture of the insecticides is used at a concentration of 0.20%, the levels of chlorfenvinphos after 14 days is not higher than 0.14 ppm; however, when it is used at a 0.15% concentration, this value is overpassed in all the samples. The residues of the cypermethrin component are not higher than 0.35 ppm throughout the whole experiment.

Exocrine pancreatic function in chronic urticaria patients is normal.

25 patients with chronic urticaria suspected to be of 'alimentary origin', were studied for a quantitative or qualitative deficiency of pancreatic enzyme secretion. All showed a normal fecal chymotrypsin excretion and 23/25 a normal bentiromide (PABA) and pancreolauryl test. In 2 females the urinary PABA and pancreolauryl tests were borderline pathological. This does not support the hypothesis that a pancreatic deficiency (of the kind which could be identified with the methods used) is associated with chronic urticaria in patients in whom improvement of urticaria occurs under a hydric or low antigenic diet.
