Questionnaires were sent to 153 chiefs of Veterans Administration psychology services to request information on service provision to women veterans; 91 responses were received. Services were classified according to four categories: (a) individual women served in response to requests; (b) individual programs designed to meet specific needs; (c) educational programs offered to female clients; and (d) staff training programs. Correlations between each of the four categories and the following factors were calculated: (a) size of the city as determined by population in which each Veterans Administration Medical Center is located; (b) state population of female veterans; (c) number of female staff psychologists; (d) annual percentage of female clients served; (e) income of female clients; (f) total number of psychologists on the staff; and (g) total annual number of clients. Significant correlations were found between number of services offered routinely in response to requests and each of the following factors: (a) state population of female veterans; (b) income of female veteran clients; (c) total number of psychologists on the staff; and (d) annual number of clients.
IQs from the Slosson Intelligence Test for 60 Head Start children drawn from three areas of metropolitan St. Louis showed the group to be heterogeneous with respect to intelligence, although there were no significant differences associated with sex or race. Consideration of this and other characteristics is needed in planning school programs.
Dezocine (Wy 16225), a new analgesic was compared randomly and double-blind with morphine 10 mg in 160 female patients complaining of moderate (group I) or severe (group II) pain after elective lower abdominal surgery; both drugs were given i.m. In group I, pain relief with dezocine 10 and 15 mg was significantly greater than dezocine 5 mg; dezocine 10 mg appeared equipotent with morphine 10 mg. Similar, but statistically insignificant differences were observed in group II. Patient sedation was minimal and untoward side-effects infrequent with all doses of the trial drugs.
A potentially acceptable and uncomplicated technique of total intravenous anaesthesia is described using flunitrazepam for induction, and maintenance by ketamine infusion with neuromuscular blockade and controlled ventilation using oxygen-enriched room air. A significant complication was the 23% incidence of nausea and/or vomiting encountered in the fifty-six patients studied. Definite factual recall of the surgical experience was reported by one patient. This was attributable to an accidental error in technique. Postoperative drowsiness was also a feature of the technique. The usual cardiovascular and psychomimetic effects associated with ketamine administration appeared markedly attenuated by flunitrazepam induction. Fifty-three (96.3%) patients expressed their willingness to receive the same anaesthetic again. Further experience of total intravenous anaesthesia with the introduction of cerebral function monitoring, allowing correlation of depth of anaesthesia with drug dosage, should allow further refinement of the technique to ensure successful and acceptable anaesthesia.
Thirty-two patients received lumbar extradural anaesthesia for elective Caesarean section. The results obtained from this series were compared with those from a similar (control) group of parturients who received general anaesthesia. The extradural group (mothers and infants) were metabolically acidaemic relative to control. However, maternal to fetal blood-gas differences were comparable in the two series. Infants sustained respiration more rapidly after regional blockade, otherwise the clinical condition of the infants was similar with extradural and general anaesthesia. No advantage of conduction over general anaesthesia was evident from this study, with respect to the biochemical status of the infant at birth.

The oligomer molecular weight of horse spleen apoferritin was determined by sedimentation-equilibrium techniques and a value of 443000 found. It is concluded that the apoferritin molecule consists of 24 subunits. At concentrations as low as 0.01mum there is no evidence of subunit dissociation.
