[A recruitment strategy for nursing students].

The growing shortage of nurses is a universal problem. In the Republic of South Africa there are increasing changes in the number of students who enter nursing as a career. At the same time there is an increase in the intensity of services, with the result that the supply exceeds the demand. The present nursing shortage requires nursing as a profession to be marketed effectively to obtain the quality and quantity of candidates to ensure the continued existence of the profession. Effective marketing implies that a recruiting-medium cannot be decided on at random. A descriptive, contextual study, based on a literature study, was carried out by means of a questionnaire. Analysis of the data showed that the public lacks knowledge of nursing. An urgent need exists thus to provide information by means of a recruitment program. A recruitment strategy cannot consist of one medium alone, since each one has its own advantages and disadvantages. A combination of a few selected recruitment mediums are recommended. This strategy must be supported by the positive action of every nurse towards her profession.

[Computer-assisted instruction in nursing].

According to Kotzé (1987:5) the numbers of student nurses showed a constant drop of 10% from 1981 until 1986. It appears that the ratio between the registered nurse and the population will severely worsen. It is therefore necessary that the educational standard of students nurses must be as high as possible to render a comprehensive service to a growing population. Computer-aided instruction can also play a role in the training of student nurses but can also help to keep student nurses as well as registered nurses in touch with the latest developments and introduce them to advanced technology like the computer.

[The use of the Swedish scale in the selection of nursing students at the Rand African University].

Students applying to follow the B. Cur. degree at the Rand Afrikaans University are subjected to a selection process. In spite of the selection process the drop-out rate is high. An attempt is being made to evaluate the present academic selection process. The amended Smeltzer method is used as a point of departure to correlate with the model proposed by the University administration. The academic predictions are implemented on the Swedish formula and a cut-off point is obtained according to a sliding scale proposed for academic selection. With the abovementioned two methods it appears that the selected population has the most successful academic results if the cut-off point of the amended Smeltzer method and the Swedish formula is 60 and 15 respectively.
