Estimation of PR and ER by immunocytochemistry in breast cancer. Comparison with radioligand binding methods.

Immunocytochemical assays for progesterone receptor (PR) using monoclonal antirabbit PR antibodies (PR-ICA) and for estrogen receptor (ER) (ER-ICA) were compared with radioligand binding (dextran-coated charcoal [DCC]) methods for receptor determination in patients with breast cancer. Immunocytochemical staining for PR was exclusively nuclear in localization. In this regard, PR staining is similar to previous findings for ER; PR-ICA showed a sensitivity of 89% and specificity of 100%. ER-ICA was also 89% sensitive and similarly specific. There was good correlation between the degree and intensity of staining and quantitative binding of radioligand. Receptor-positive tumors, however, show considerable variation of immunocytochemical staining, suggesting heterogeneity of cellular PR content. The availability of an immunocytochemical assay for PR increases the discriminatory potential for these methods of receptor determination.

Neuroblastoma in adults. A report of 3 cases.

Well documented as one of the more frequent tumours of childhood, neuroblastomas in adults are rare. Correct diagnosis, and distinction from other small-cell neoplasms, is thus often delayed. Three further cases are described in 2 women and 1 man between the ages of 26 years and 47 years. Metastatic disease existed at the time of initial presentation in 1 patient, while another had experienced multiple recurrences at the primary site before correct diagnosis. All, however, had a favourable response to chemotherapy, albeit in the short term. Primary diagnosis was made by fine-needle aspiration cytology, together with electron microscopic evaluation of aspirated cells in 1 case. The histological, cytological and electron microscopic characteristics of neuroblastomas are presented and illustrated, and their differentiation from other small cell tumours in adults discussed.

Blastomycosis. A case report.

Blastomycosis was once thought to be restricted to North America; it has rarely been found in the RSA. The first case reported in the RSA was associated with a diffuse pulmonary infiltrate and cavitation; the patient responded to amphotericin B.

Acupuncture--a therapeutic concept in the treatment of painful conditions and functional disorders. Report on 971 cases.

The results in 971 outpatients who have been treated with acupuncture for different diseases are reported. The outcome of treatments and number of sessions are discussed in relation to the different diseases. Acupuncture treatment was regarded as successful when 1. the patients had no pain at all without medication and 2. there was a significant improvement (no long-term medication, only mild pain under unusual strain, minimal medication under such circumstances). We obtained positive results in cephalalgias , sinusitis, cervical spine syndrome, shoulder-arm syndrome, ischialgias , back pain, constipation, herpes zoster, allergic rhinitis and disturbances of peripheral blood flow. For the following ailments, in order to reduce the medication, we recommend acupuncture despite a high rate of recurrence: Trigeminal neuralgia, colitis ulcerosa, bronchial asthma and cancer pain. Results in the treatment of mental disturbances were unsatisfactory, and in cases of tinnitus results were negative.
