[Water absorption and resistance to wear of 2 newly invented composite resins].

Two recently built composites, one for posterior teeth, and the other for general employ, were evaluated in relation to their water absorption and resistance to wear by means of the "scratch test". Critical loads and attrition of the two materials were also evaluated, with statistical analysis. The results supported the good qualities of the two composites, which are to be considered very advanced in the field of esthetic reconstruction materials.

Generation and characterization of monoclonal antibodies to 28-, 35-, and 65-kilodalton proteins of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Three monoclonal antibodies (H60.15, H61.3, and H105.10) directed to protein antigens of Mycobacterium tuberculosis were obtained and characterized. H60.15 recognizes a protein with a molecular mass of 28 kilodaltons (kDa) with broad cross-reactivity on a panel of 12 species and strains of mycobacteria. H61.3 reacts with a 35-kDa protein present in M. tuberculosis, Mycobacterium bovis BCG, and M. africanum. On the basis of the antigen molecular masses and competition experiments with other monoclonal antibodies, H60.15 and H61.3 seem to be the first described monoclonal antibodies to these M. tuberculosis proteins. H105.10 binds to the cross-reactive 65-kDa protein present in mycobacteria. Epitope mapping of H105.10 was performed by using the M. leprae DNA sublibrary available in bacteriophage lambda gt11 for this antigen and revealed that its epitope resides in the region from amino acids 20 to 54. The 28-, 35-, and 65-kDa antigens isolated by immunoblotting and presented on nitrocellulose to pleural effusion T cells from tuberculosis patients induced a proliferative response, indicating the presence of T-cell epitopes. These observations indicate that two protein antigens should be added to the list of antigens detectable in M. tuberculosis by monoclonal antibodies. The common feature of such proteins, the elicitation of an immune response of limited or broad cross-reactivity for mycobacteria, encourages the search for their role in the pathogenesis of mycobacterioses.

Female reproductive health in two lamp factories: effects of exposure to inorganic mercury vapour and stress factors.

To evaluate the possible influence of mercury vapour on female reproduction, 153 women working in a mercury vapour lamp factory have been compared with 193 women employed in another factory of the same company, where mercury was not used. Both groups of subjects were exposed to stress factors (noise, rhythms of production, and shift work). The production process has been analysed by inspection of the plants and by collective discussions with "homogeneous groups" of workers; a retrospective inquiry into work history and reproductive health events has been subsequently performed by an individual interview. Women exposed to mercury vapour currently not exceeding the time weighted average air concentration of 0.01 mg/m3 declared higher prevalence and incidence rates of menstrual disorders, primary subfecundity, and adverse pregnancy outcome; however, the progression of these problems with the level of exposure to mercury inside the same factory was not always clear. The results of this study neither prove nor exclude the possibility that occupational exposure to this concentration of mercury has a negative effect on female reproduction.

[Transverse colon atresia. Case presentation (author's transl)].

The Authors report about a case of colonic atresia localized on the transverse colon a few cms after the right flexure curd by one time resection and end-to-end anastomosis. The pathology of the lesion is atypical since features of Bland-Sutton and Louw's classification types II and III were mixed together at the atresia site while the radiological features were those typical of type II.

[Walled city project: fluoroprophylaxis in the prevention of caries].

The Authors evaluate some parameters relative to the concentration of fluoride in the potable water and in that bottled available in the territory of the Ussl no. 19. The integration of these parameters with the data that regard some life habits (frequency of assumption of the fluoride compresses, beverages of common use) in a target group, underlines the importance of the educational aspects of a preventive program in a community environment aiming to obtain the benefits of such method.

[Prevention of caries in a district. Comparison of a target group with a control group at 7 years].

In the trial of the Ussl n. 19 it is developing since a period a specific program for prevention of the caries on a target group (Progetto città murata). For the verification of the efficiency, it was compared the oro-dental situation of the same group in a territory near and similar in socio-economic characteristics. It was emerged a better oro-dental situation in the target group with respect to the control-group. In fact the children who have undergone the therapy of the PCM do not only demonstrate better indices of DMF at seven years, but also a major adhesion to the fluorophylaxis.

[Between public and private. Possibilities and prospects for dentistry in Italy in the 90's].

The Italian dental panorama is largely changing. In addition to the major increase of professionals, there is also an increase of the population sensibility and of the political and administrative authorities with respect to the health of the oral cavity. In the short and medium term it is foreseen a variation of the dental sanitary interventions from the mere therapeutic-rehabilitative approach to a global action which is educative and preventive.
