[Newcastle disease in Algeria. Study of the pathogenic properties of Newcastle disease virus strains isolated in Algeria].

The Newcastle disease in Algeria: Study of pathogenic properties of the Newcastle disease viral strains isolated in Algeria. The study of pathogenic characters of 14 strains of Newcastle disease virus isolated from 1972 to 1982 was carried out: The following testS were realized: the mean lethal time for the chicken embryo, the pathogenic power index by intravenous way, the pathogenic power index by intracerebral way, the hemagglutination spectrum and the thermal stability of the hemagglutination. In short we can say that these isolated 14 strains are fast-growing.

[Diagnosis of rabies infection in animals using monoclonal antibodies].

Two monoclonal antibodies (M.A.), specific for viral nucleocapsid, the M.A. D-20 and the M.A. D-43 raised against a fixed strain of rabies virus (C.V.S. 11), have been tested in parallel with a standard antirabies serum (S.A.R.) in diagnosis of animal rabies virus infection. 44 brain imprints from animals which died from rabies were tested by indirect immunofluorescent technique with monoclonal antibodies. Constant correlation has been found between the M.A. D-43 and the S.A.R. in the diagnosis of animal rabies virus infection in all cases studied. For M.A. D-20, concordance of results with S.A.R. was found only in limited number of cases.

[Outbreak of equine influenza by a new strain of Myxovirus type 2. II. Epizootiology].

During an epizootic of equine acute respiratory disease in Algeria, a strain of equine influenza virus was isolated. Sera examination by hemagglutinin inhibition test and complement fixation test confirmed the etiology of the disease. The first and second outbreak of the disease remained localised. The third outbreak spread within few months to all parts of the country. Horses vaccinated with a commercial equine influenza vaccine remained healthy.

[Survey of Salmonella in animals].

In order to study the incidence of Salmonella in animals and to determine their role in the epidemiology of human salmonellosis in Algeria, a search for Salmonella was carried out in 1 795 animals of various zoological groups and species. The samples examined were either intestinal or vesicular or from the viscera or mesenteric ganglions. 118 animals were found to be Salmonella carriers. The rate of infestation varied from one species to another. Several different serotypes varying from one zoological group to another and from one species to another were isolated. Although some of the Salmonella serotypes isolated have been found in man, the rate of infested animals suggests that animals play a limited role in the etiology of salmonellosis in Algeria.

[Role of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in bovine tuberculosis].

The authors report the results of a survey on the possible role of human Mycobacterium in the ganglio-pulmonary tuberculosis of bovines. 232 bovines seized in the abattoirs of Algiers over a period of 8 months were concerned by this work. The results obtained showed that microscopic examination was negative in 50% of cases. This result was expected as ganglionary lesions are paucibacillary. Cultures were also negative in 50% of cases, 25% of them were contaminated. 50% rate of positive cultures was obtained when Loewenstein-Jensen medium with 1% pyruvate was used. Morphological and biochemical identification showed that out of 113 strains, 7 were Mycobacterium tuberculosis (6.2%). In seems therefore that Mycobacterium tuberculosis, human pathogen, is also pathogenic for bovines. Its frequent occurrence could be explained by the high prevalence of human tuberculosis in Algeria.

[Practical methods for rabies control in Algeria].

Control measures currently in use in Algeria have not given the results expected. Suggestions are made of the eradication of rabies in rural areas as well as in urban ones by concentrating on the dog and adapting the legislation.

[Management of a suspect bite].

Ignorance of the indications or unsuitable treatment are the most common causes of mistakes in the vaccinal or serovaccinal treatment of rabies. The physiological, clinical and epidemiological bases are brought to mind and a simple management scheme is suggested taking into account the W.H.O. recommendations.

[Epidemiology of rabies in Algeria].

An epidemiological study on rabies in Algeria has been carried out on data provided by the "Institut national de Santé publique" and the "Institut Pasteur d'Algérie". It showed that no region is unhurt. The animal reservoir is of the domestic type, essentially the dog. In 40% of cases, bites are due to stray dogs.
