The induction of micronuclei in human lymphocytes by in vitro irradiation with alpha particles from plutonium-239.
Human peripheral blood lymphocytes were irradiated for 24 h in vitro with plutonium-239 citrate. The dose response for micronucleus induction using the cytochalasin B blocking technique fitted well to a linear relationship. Comparison with published data from the same laboratory using X-irradiation, indicated an RBE of 3.6 for alpha particles at low doses.
Cytological changes in the pars distalis of the female rat hypophysis grafted under the kidney capsule.
Intact female rats received transplants of two hypophysial partes distales under the kidney capsule. The plasma levels of prolactin were determined, and the ultrastructure of the grafted gland was studied 15, 45 and 90 days after the operation. Although prolactin levels in the three experimental groups were significantly higher than those in control rats, a decrease in prolactin level was detected in the 45-day samples. Parallel ultrastructural changes suggest that between the 45th and 90th postoperative day a process is initiated leading to hyperplasia and hypertrophy of prolactotrophs.
[Myoclonus in Alzheimer's disease. 2 anatomoclinical cases].
A few autopsy proved cases of Alzheimer's disease with myoclonus have been hitherto reported. We think that myoclonus is a frequent clinical feature in advanced cases of Alzheimer's disease. Our second case is such an example with a chronic evolution. In cases like our first one, with a short history, myoclonus, and atypical, diphasic, periodic complexes in the EEG, clinical differential diagnosis with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease can be very difficult. Alzheimer disease has been considered an unitary clinico-pathological entity. However, transmission to the non human primates has been successfully achieved only in familiar cases but no in the sporadic ones. On the other hand some of his neuropathological features have been found in two cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, one of them successfully transmitted to the chimpanzee. All these points could eventually modify our present unitary concept on Alzheimer's disease.
