[The maxillofacial prosthesis: palatal obturators. The principles of treatment and rehabilitation in a case of buccorhinosinusal communication].

Having analysed the causes which lead to the loss of substance from the palatal vault, the different types of communication which then result, their evolution and the consequent functional defects are identified. By describing a complex clinical case, and having taken into consideration both aims and materials, the techniques of prosthetic rehabilitation are illustrated using obturator devices. The results of the various phases are examined.

[Prosthetic rehabilitation in temporomandibular joint dysfunction based on electromyographic and radiological findings].

The authors present four clinical cases for which they used the same diagnostic approach as for the study of craniomandibular disturbances. The clinical examination provides a diagnostic clue and, consequently, orients toward the proper selection of paraclinical tests for neuromuscular and radiological investigations. After some time, prosthetic rehabilitation will also be controlled by the same means.

[A SEM evaluation of the surface color of Dicor crowns].

With multiple measurements on Dicor crowns cast on extracted teeth and observed under SEM, we determined that the thickness of the external layer of shading porcelain has a mean value of 55 +/- 12 microns (for 4 applications). This datum must be considered so that a dimensional error is not introduced in the construction of these types of crowns.

[Use of distraction plates in the pathology of the temporo-mandibular articulation].

Condylar compression in the glenoid cavity can cause anatomical alteration to the joint surfaces. This situation is usually accompanied by pain and functional limitation. Three types of plate used to decompress the joint structures involved are described. The use of the plates is based on the particular clinical situation involved.

[Gnathologic-orthodontic protocol for Class II, division 1 with TMJ dysfunction].

The Authors present a case of Class II Division I malocclusion associated with TMJ dysfunction and treated with a gnathologic-orthodontic approach. The protocol involves five steps: extraction of third molars because not useful in the orthodontic treatment, placement of a edgewise appliance following the Tweed technique, use of a neuromuscular deprogramming appliance, an orthopedic appliance associated with physiotherapy.

[Determination of the vertical dimension using the Slavicek method in 6 cases of complete denture rehabilitation].

The vertical dimension of occlusion in complete denture cases can be established with different techniques; one of these includes the use of a lateral cephalogram and its analysis. Accurate indications of the amount of the vertical dimension can be obtained through anatomical reference points. The method that we describe can be performed on mounted costs more easily than on patients at the dental chair. We report the data of six clinical cases in which the method has been used: the results, clinically analyzed, seem to be good, functionally and aesthetically.
