Airborne pollen and fungal spore sampling on the central California coast: the San Luis Obispo pollen project.

A semiarid coastal location in San Luis Obispo, California was surveyed for 3 years (1986-1988) using a Rotorod sampler. Significant year-to-year variations in predominant pollen occurred, and abundant levels of fungal spores were observed. Coincidently, a large wildlands fire that may have affected pollen levels occurred in the region shortly before sampling began. The entire survey period took place during a drought.

Neural-tube defects produced in Syrian hamsters by potato glycoalkaloids.

Keeler et al. (78) showed that potato sprouts could be teratogens for the central nervous system in the Syrian hamster. We demonstrate here the same teratogenic effect from a British cultivar, Arran Pilot. Most of the activity was traced to the two solanidine triglycosides, alpha-chaconine and, at a higher dose level, alpha-solanine. Some possible implications for the study of human neural-tube defects are considered.

Identification of allergens in dog dander extract. I. Clinical and immunological aspects of allergenicity activity.

Allergenic activity of mixed dog dander extract was compared with dog serum albumin by skin testing, RAST testing and RAST inhibition. Whereas albumin is a potent allergen, additional lower molecular weight allergens determined by sucrose density gradient centrifugation and immunoelectrophoresis were found. Identification of the most potent allergens and standardization of extract used for testing and treatment is a necessary prerequisite in understanding dog dander hypersensitivity.
