Ultrasonic tissue characterization of experimental venous intimal hyperplasia.

Ultrasonic tissue characterization (UTC) employing slope and Y-intercept parameters from the normalized power spectrum of backscattered echoes was employed in vivo to study compositional changes in the walls of pig jugular veins in which thrombi were experimentally induced. Light microscopy revealed these changes to be intimal hyperplasia with an early predominance of smooth muscle cells and a later mixture of smooth muscle cells and collagen deposits. UTC distinguished intimal hyperplasia from previously reported data from luminal thrombosis UTC. Furthermore, UTC was able to discriminate between early (predominantly smooth muscle cells) and older (smooth muscle cells plus collagen deposits) intimal hyperplasia. The study suggests that intimal hyperplasia in the experimental model used may be organized thrombus and that UTC may be able to follow both the development of wall changes as well as luminal changes occurring in venous thrombosis.

Structure of premenstrual endometrium in HMG + HCG induced anovulatory women.

In this study structural alterations were tested on anovulatory infertile women who had undergone treatment of HMG + HCG to induce ovulation and subsequently to achieve pregnancy. For this purpose, a single premenstrual endometrial fundal biopsy was performed and evaluated using light and electron microscopy. The aim of the study was to evaluate the biopsies with respect to 'in-phase' or 'out-of-phase' at light microscopic level, in which a series of strict criteria were chosen, and then to detect the additional structural abnormalities at electron microscopic level, if present. Only one of the women in our study who had an in-phase endometrium became pregnant after proper treatment protocol individually adjusted and consequently terminated by an early abortion. Histologic features of the biopsies revealed that about half were normal while the rest had various types of structural abnormalities in the transformation of the secretory endometrium detected by light and/or electron microscopy. At the electron microscopic level, multiple alterations were seen in cellular and intercellular components even in those diagnosed as normal by light microscopy. As a result of the above data it was concluded that the cause of inconceivability might arise from some fine structural alterations which may affect the endometrial receptivity of an implanting embryo.

[Prevalence of anti-delta antibodies in HBsAg carriers].

In order to bring out the prevalence of infections caused by Delta virus dependent upon HBV for its replication, we investigated the presence of anti-D antibodies in individuals who determined as positive for HBsAg, by using EIA method. Of the 81 HBsAg positive individuals; seventy-two were asymptomatic HBsAg carriers (88.9), six had acute symptomatic hepatitis (7.4%) and three suffered from chronic liver disease (3.7%). Only 4 individuals who were all asymptomatic carriers were positive for anti-D antibody (4.9%) and the percentage of anti-D antibody in asymptomatic carrier group was 5.5% (4/72).

Analysis of delta F508 mutation in cystic fibrosis pathology specimens.

Incidence of delta F508, a severe mutation of the CFTR gene is found to be 36.3% in paraffin block cystic fibrosis liver tissues. Samples are histologically grouped according to severity of pancreatic involvement. Two families where delta F508 was detected postmortem and who have no living children, will have the chance for a prenatal diagnosis in the future pregnancies.
