[A thyroid function study in subjects with Down's syndrome].

OBJECTIVE: The main objective is to know the application degree of Spanish Health Program for Down Syndrome People respect to thyroid function. The secondary objective is to know the thyroid pathology in our population. DESIGN: Observational, descriptive and crossover study. SETTING: Primary care teams in collaboration with endocrinology services. PARTICIPANTS: Down syndrome people who lived in Albacete in 1993. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Survey to Down syndrome parents. Determination of thyroid hormones: T3, T4 and TSH, and thyroid autoantibodies (thyroglobulin and microsomal autoantibodies). RESULTS: 15.5% of our population had been done thyroid analysis before this study. The prevalence of thyroid pathology is 50.6% of the studied population. CONCLUSIONS: Due to low application of this program and its usefulness in thyroid pathology detection, we think that its should be used in primary care.

[The medical and social aspects of Down's syndrome].

OBJECTIVE: To find what health care is received and the family, school and work integration of people with Down's syndrome (DS). DESIGN: Descriptive study. SETTING: Primary health care. Community framework. PATIENT AND OTHER PARTICIPANTS: DS (1 to 25) in Albacete capital. 42 out of 49 were interviewed. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: A census and a questionnaire to the parents. Investigations carried out: hearing two or three times: 18 (42.8%); visual acuteness (> 5 years old) three or more times: 22 (61.1%); thyroid function and spinal column: 5 (11.9%); of those over 5, 9 (25%) were obese and 26 (72.2%) brushed their teeth daily; 14 parents (38.8%) had a fortnightly interview with the teachers; 12 (75%) received training in workshops and 5 worked. CONCLUSIONS: It is considered advisable to run the checks in the programme of the Spanish Foundation for DS Institutions (especially thyroid and neck) and to improve mouth-dental hygiene and weight control. Greater coordination between work and work training is needed.

[An epidemiological study of congenital dyschromatopsias in schoolchildren].

BACKGROUND: Taking into consideration that present-day communication is based on colours and shapes, the prevalence of anomalies in the chromatic sight in the red-green axis has been studied in the school boys of the city of Albacete. METHODS: The test of Ishihara has been used in an aleatory representative sample; and dyschromatopsic pupils, so classified in this test, have been further explored with the anomaloscopy Pickford-Nicolson, in order to know their anomaly kind and degree. RESULTS: The prevalence obtained is similar to those reported by other studies carried out in the European white race. CONCLUSIONS: Taking into account the transcendence of this phenomenon, we consider that this exploration must be included in the systematic examinations at school labour and general level.
