[Rabies in Tunisia. A comparative study of results from the last 36 years].

The author presents an evaluation of rabies control during the last 36 years. He discusses especially the problem of vectors, diagnosis, vaccine and treatment, taking into account the 1982-1987 National Campaign for Animal Rabies Control. He notes an improvement of the situation with a significant decrease in the rate of positivity among the biter animals. He considers, however that this rate remains relatively too high to allow the prevention of disease persitance in the country. He suggests the continuation of the efforts undertaken to control biter animals and eventually the extension of the campaign to the regional level.

[Bronchial cytology in the diagnosis of broncho-pulmonary cancer in Tunisia].

The authors present a retrospective study of 287 pulmonary cytologic exams censed in Pasteur Institute - Tunis between 1970 and 1986. These 287 exams consist of 145 bronchic aspiration liquids and 142 spittles. A systematic exam was practiced in patients presenting a pulmonary symptomatology suggesting little or not at all broncho pulmonary cancer. 40 of these exams present cancerous cells (15 cases) or suspected cancerous cells (25 cases). The biopsy confirms a malignant tumor in 25 patients (5%). These results should urge us toward a cytologic exam not only in adults presenting any respiratory symptomatology, but also in subjects at high risk, especially smokers. Localising the tumor is necessary for the biopsy. This biopsy will lead us to determine the histologic type and consequently the adequate therapy.

[The development of rabies in Tunisia from 1982 to 1986].

The authors describe the epidemiology of rabies disease in Tunisia since 1982, the problem of reservoirs and vectors, the production of vaccine, the diagnosis and the treatment of the disease. They note that this disease is decreasing in the animals that have bitten, nevertheless the canine rabies remains an important problem of public health in the country.

[The bacterial pollution of coastal waters of the southern suburbs of Tunis].

The authors present in this paper a study of the bacterian pollution of inshored waters of southern suburbs of Tunis, on the basis of 180 samples collected in 15 different stations, 15 monthly (one for each station). Two districts have been considered: Ez-Zahra and Hammam-Lif. The two districts are submitted to an important bacterian pollution, mainly due to human factor but also to geographical and geomorphological data, to physico-chemical parameters and to some biological characters.

[Bacterial pollution of the littoral waters of the northern suburbs of Tunis].

The authors present in this paper a study of the bacterial pollution of inshore waters of northern suburbs of Tunis, on the basis of 180 sampled collected in 15 different stations, 15 monthly (one for each station). Three districts have been considered: Raouad-Gammarth, La Marsa-Carthage and La Goulette. This last district is mostly submitted to the bacterial pollution, caused by its neighbourhood of the lagoon of Tunis "reserve of pollution" and of the city of Tunis.

[A technique of accelerated immunization of animals producing antivenom serum].

A technique of "fast" immunization, for antivenom serum production, is reported. Comparatively to the common technique, this fast method is characterized by more numerous immunizing injections (15 instead of 8) during the two first cycles of immunisation, higher venom doses and the lack of the rest period taking place between the two first cycles of immunization in the common technique. By this fast technique one may obtain a highly efficient anti-venmous serum within 2 1/2 to 3 months whereas the common technique needs 3 1/2 to 4 months to obtain the same results.

[Syndrome of irregular maturation of the endometrium].

Following their study on biopsies in a group of tunisian women the authors insist on the unchanged histologic and clinic characters of the irregular ripening syndrome of the endometrium, as described in 1928. They suggest a mediation by the oncocyte for the use of oestrogens in glandular site.

Bioecologic aspects of Phlebotomine sandflies in relation to human and canine visceral leishmaniasis in northern Tunisia.

In northern Tunisia 29 sandfly collecting places were studied for two years, in five human leishmaniasis foci, seven canine foci and in the nature. Nine species were found among the 4942 specimens collected. P. perniciosus, the well known vector of visceral leishmaniasis and the herpetophile S. minuta parroti were commonest. The sandfly season extended from april to october. P. perniciosus showed a numerical curve with one peak. It occupied various types of shelters in nature and human settlements, but prefer shady and humid shelters. In settlements it is frequently found around dwellings and has been identified in human and canine leishmaniasis foci. The highest sandfly densities and greatest species diversity were noticed in towns, especially in the cracks of the old walls or old inhabited ruins, where rodents as well as the small domestic animals provide a favourable environment for the sandflies. The historical urban ruins are the main biotope of the sandfly vectors. Infantile visceral leishmaniasis occurs during summer when the children sleep in front of the houses or in large, opened rooms exposed to P. perniciosus flies which have bitten infected dogs.
