Cerebrospinal fluid and serum lysozyme activity in bacterial and viral meningitis.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum lysozyme concentrations were determined in infants and children with and without acute infectious disease of the central nervous system. Serum lysozyme values from patients with bacterial and viral meningitis were found within the normal range. Lysozyme activity was absent or very low (below 0.5 microgram/ml) in normal CSF. High levels (4-12 microgram/ml) in patients with viral meningitis. A decrease of the lysozyme activity coincided with the clinical improvement of the bacterial meningitis. The lysozyme activity in CSF should be of significant value in detecting an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system.

Spinal fluid lysozyme in the diagnosis of central nervous system tumours.

C.S.F. lysozyme concentrations were determined in 24 normal subjects and 14 patients with a variety of neurologic diseases. We found absent or very low activity (below 0-5 mg/ml, in 4 out of 24) in normal individuals. Patients with tumours and other neurological diseases had high lysozyme activity in C.S.F. Our findings suggest that lysozyme is not an accurate indicator of the presence of neoplastic disease as suggested by other investigators.

Adenylate cyclase activity in human tissues.

Adenylate cyclase activity in liver, lung, pancreas, and heart ventricle, from full-term and premature newborns has been assayed. Of all tissues studied, heart had the highest activity. Fluoride 10 mM stimulates adenylate cyclase in all tissues. Glucagon evoked a small activation of liver adenylate cyclase.

Bilirubin inhibition of protein kinase: its prevention by cyclic AMP.

The effect of bilirubin on protein kinase activity has been studied. Bilirubin inhibits the binding of cyclic AMP to protein kinase. It also inhibits the phosphorylation of histone. The inhibitory action of bilirubin is competitive, and increased amounts of cyclic AMP relieved the inhibition.
