We describe nine patients who had phacomorphic or phacolytic glaucoma. After intraocular pressure (IOP) was reduced medically, all patients had extracapsular cataract extraction. All had intraocular lens implantation except one. The surgery improved visual acuity and resulted in normal IOP in all eyes.
Thirty-six eyes with excessive astigmatism following cataract extraction via a corneal section were subjected to suture adjustment. This was performed six to eight weeks postoperatively under topical anaesthesia. The cases were selected from a large volume of corneal section cases because they had over 3.0 dioptres astigmatism. We reduced astigmatism significantly in the majority. There were no serious complications.
Five patients were subjected to a new technique designed to correct high astigmatism not responding to suture removal or adjustment. The method is described and its use illustrated in five case histories. Four of the five cases were successfully treated. The reasons for the one failure are discussed. All procedures were uncomplicated. The technique is simple, safe, and reversible.
A retrospective study of 102 cases of Boberg-Ans intraocular lens implantations was conducted. The operations were performed in 3 Birmingham eye units by 5 consultants and 6 surgeons in training. Follow-up ranged from 6 months to 2 years, with a mean of 12.6 months. No cases with adequate follow-up were excluded. When eyes with pre-existing adverse factors were excluded, 87% achieved 6/12 or better. There were no appreciable difference between the results obtained by consultants and those of surgeons in training. The advantages and disadvantages of the lens are discussed.
Sixty-six consecutive cases undergoing enucleation with the insertion of the Roper-Hall magnetic implant at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Hospital (BMEH) were followed up to re-establish the rate of extrusion. It was possible to study the records of all 66 patients. An extrusion rate of 1.5% was found.
A nationwide survey of pellet gun injuries to the eye, sustained over a 5-year period, was carried out. Eighty-seven cases were reported. Seventy-seven per cent were found to have a final visual acuity of 6/60 or worse on the Snellen chart. The pathological findings and possible steps to reduce the incidence of these injuries are discussed.
