[An update on the polysomnographic assessment of sleep-related respiratory disorders].

The paper presents a review of recent findings in the instrumental assessment of sleep-related breathing disorders. Basic concepts of definition, classification and especially medical instrumentation used for polysomnography (PSG) are introduced. The authors present standard protocols of polygraphic investigation and solutions to some practical problems, as they appear in literature.

[The electroencephalographic aspects in stress epistaxis].

The nasal haemorrhage is a symptom whose significance is seldom completely investigated. In this paper we present the results that we have obtained in two groups of patients: a pediatric population who presented for repeated episodes of nasal haemorrhage and a group of first trimester pregnant women who also have noticed the appearance of this symptom. Beside the clinical examination, a paraclinical assessment has been performed, which included a laboratory profile (hematology and biochemistry) and electroencephalography (EEG), in which we found significant changes. We conclude that EEG is a valuable investigation technique for diagnosis and monitoring purposes in nasal hemorrhage. Also, the clinical management of the stress-related nasal hemorrhage must address multiple issues for becoming efficient.

[The outlook for human blood component separation and the treatment of cancerous tumors by magnetic methods].

This work presents in brief some expectations related to the solution of certain biomedical problems by using a non-conventional physical method: The high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS). At first a short presentation of the HGMS method is given and then its application in separation of the human blood components is reported. The up to date intensely studied method with magnetic carriers is then described. Among other things, this method enables the cancer tumors treatment by intracavity radiotherapy, drug targeting, and diagnosis exploration.

[The use of high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) in obtaining red blood cell mass].

This paper presents the "high gradient magnetic separation" (HGMS) and its use in red blood cells separation. A high gradient magnetic field system is described (set up from a filamentary iron-magnetic matrix), that is specially design for red blood cells capture. The configurations and the conditions that are needed for the red blood cells concentration process to allow the red blood cells mass to by obtained are evaluated. Finally, another possible technique of red blood cells concentration based on a type of continual magnetic separation is described.

[The importance of ano-rectal manometry in irritable bowel syndrome].

UNLABELLED: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) represents a frequent cause for gastroenterological referral. 50% of all gastroenterological consultations are for functional gastrointestinal disorders (IBS included). Multiple motility abnormalities were described in IBS. The AIM of the study was to evaluate the role of ano-rectal manometry in the diagnosis of IBS. STUDY DESIGN: 24 patients with IBS (mean age 50.8 +/- 15.4) and a control group of 10 subjects with no abdominal symptoms (mean age 48.1 +/- 12.3) had each an ano-rectal manometry examination. RESULTS: After exclusion of constipation predominant IBS subjects, the IBS patients presented lower perception threshold (22.1 +/- 10.9 ml) than the control group (60.2 +/- 11.3 ml) (p < 0.05) and than the constipation predominant group (81.3 +/- 44.0) (p < 0.05). In 44% of constipation predominant IBS concomitant pathology, revealed by manometry, was present: megarectum or hemorrhoids (spasm). CONCLUSION: Anorectal manometry could be a useful tool for the evaluation of IBS patients.

[Biofeedback therapy for constipation and fecal incontinence].

Constipation and fecal incontinence are problems that are frequently encountered in daily practice. Over the last decade biofeedback therapy has emerged as a useful adjunct for the treatment of these problems. Biofeedback therapy is a learning process that is based on "operant conditioning" techniques. Biofeedback training aims to restore a degree of continence that enables patients to resume their activities to a satisfactory level with good success rates and prolonged benefits. The technique requires height levels of motivation not only in the patients but also in the instructor who is providing verbal feedback about the adequacy of a patients performance.

[Actual modalities of separation by magnetic methods of active biological compounds, cells and pathogenic agents].

The paper presents an overview on magnetic techniques of bio-processing and some of their possible applications. These techniques are in fact direct, or more frequently, indirect magnetic means for separation of particulate substances. A brief presentation of direct and of the most important indirect methods (magnetic carrier and magnetic fluids technologies) is made. There are shown some of the possible applications of magnetic bio-processing in bio-technology and medicine: active biological compounds fixation, isolation and modification, cells and cells organelles separation, removal of xenobiotics, immuno-magnetic testing, pathogen microbes identification.

[Magnetic carrier method- an expectation for antitumoral therapy].

In order to enhance antineoplastic agents efficiency new therapy methods were developed one of which being magnetic targeted chemotherapy (MTC). MTC method consists in a permanent or reversible selective binding of highly magnetic particles (carriers) with drugs, antibodies et. al., followed by targeting or adhesion of these complexes to the tumor using an external magnetic field. At this early stage of targeting tumors with magnetic particles, there are reasons to be optimistic.

[Preliminary pharmacological study on a "magnetic" drug complex].

Standard therapy requires high amounts of drugs, with subsequent risks of harmful effects on normal tissues. A treatment method that possible can avoid these risks is based on magnetic carriers (the method is designated also as magnetic carrier technique). The method consists in the selective attachment on a micro particle (permanent or reversible bonds), with strong magnetic moment, of an entity with no intrinsic magnetic properties (cells, microorganisms, antibody, antigens or chemicals), followed by external magnetic field targeting of the complexes ("active targeting"). The aims of this study were (1) to evaluate the acute toxicity of two original ferro-fluid (ammonium oleate and sodium oleate-based ferro-fluid) and (2) to assess the diclofenac (non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug, NSAIDS)--sodium oleate-based ferro-fluid efficiency in an acute inflammation model. We founded ammonium oleate-based ferro-fluid to have a strong dose-dependent toxicity, possible trough in vivo ammonium ions release; sodium oleate based-ferro-fluid seems to have a less toxicity. Diclofenac, diclofenac-ferro-fluid complex and ferro-fluid alone, each blocks the 6 hours inflammatory peak and the first two block also the 72 hours inflammatory peak. We conclude that the diclofenac-ferro-fluid complex is probably concentrated in the area of external magnetic field application, leading to a stronger effect of the antiinflammatory drug. Taking in consider our results we cannot exclude a possible summation of the individual effects of diclofenac, ferro-fluid, and external magnetic field on the inflammatory phenomenon.

Breast-feeding and natural family planning.

The record of 50 postpartum women who intended to breast-feed for longer than 6 month were analyzed. Fifty percent of the women breast-feed longer than 12 month, and 50% resumed menses by 40 weeks after childbirth. Fifty-two women record of mucus and basal body temperature (BBT) fort at least 4 week before resumption of menses. Ovulation before menses while fully breast-feeding was probable in only one woman. Fifty percent of the first postpartum cycles had a short luteal phase Thirty-five women chose NFP to avoid pregnancy during the study period. Mucus and BBT proved to be a good marker of ovulation during postpartum cycles. Confidence in NFP during lactational amenorrhoea and first postpartum cycles in analyzed. Finally, research aimed at improving the teaching and use of NP for postpartum breast-feeding women is described.
