Ectopic immature renal tissue in a lumbosacral lipoma: pathologic and radiologic findings.

Ectopic immature renal tissue was found in a lumbosacral subcutaneous lipoma with intradural extension in a 6-day-old female with spina bifida. No additional neurologic or renal anomalies were found. Ectopic renal tissue is an extremely rare finding. Histopathologic and MRI results from this case are presented and the possible significance of ectopic renal tissue in relation to the origin of extrarenal Wilms' tumors is discussed.

Communicating spinal arachnoid cysts: diagnosis by delayed metrizamide computed tomography.

A case of an extradural spinal arachnoid cyst is presented with emphasis on the neuroradiologic characteristics of this lesion. The cyst was definitely diagnosed by delayed metrizamide spinal computed tomography. Extradural spinal arachnoid cysts, or diverticula, have been the subject of much discussion in the neuroradiologic and neurosurgical literature. However, the appearance of a communicating arachnoid cyst on delayed spinal computed tomography after metrizamide myelography is heretofore undescribed in the English language neurosurgical literature.

Early detection in suspected herpes simplex encephalitis.

In a retrospective study of ten patients who had brain biopsy because of suspected herpes simplex encephalitis, the diagnosis was confirmed in only three patients. However, in four patients whose clinical presentation was indistinguishable from that of herpes simplex encephalitis, biopsy revealed other treatable conditions. These findings, together with a review of the recent literature, indicate that brain biopsy is the appropriate way to evaluate such patients.

The axon reflex flare.

The axon reflex flare is a well-described dermatologic entity with historic and diagnostic value in dermatologic practice. Recent research into the role of neuropeptide mediators has elucidated a fascinating and complex interaction between biochemistry and clinical dermatology. These principles should enhance understanding of those constant dermatologic entitites, the flare, the itch, and the wheal.

The importance of brain biopsy in suspected herpes simplex encephalitis.

In a retrospective study of 10 patients who underwent biopsies because of suspected herpes simplex encephalitis, the diagnosis was confirmed in only 3 patients. However, in 4 patients whose clinical presentations were indistinguishable from herpes simplex encephalitis, biopsy revealed other treatable conditions. These findings, together with a review of the recent literature, indicate that brain biopsy is the appropriate way to evaluate such patients.
