UNLABELLED: Chronic renal failure (CRF) might gradually induce the occurrence of morphological and functional cardiac disturbances; these cardiac disturbances make up supplementary risk factors in children with CRF. The aim of our study was to determine the role of echocardiography(Echo) for the diagnosis of these cardiac disturbances acquired during the evolution of CRF in child. We studied 20 patients(aged between 5 and 18 years) with CRF, from whom 13 were dialysed. All patients underwent 2D echocardiography with Doppler, including the study of systolic and diastolic function of the left ventricle(LV). The main echocardiographic findings were:--concentric LV-hypertrophy(8 cases) and asymmetrical LV-hypertrophy(3);--dilated cardio-myopathy(3);--diastolic dysfunction of the LV(10);--normal systolic function in most of the cases;--mitral and tricuspid regurgitation(3);--pulmonary hypertension(2);--pericardial effusion (8) to cardiac tamponade (2). Echo allowed a better assessment of cardiac morphology and LV function and their improvement in some cases, after hemodialysis and antihypertensive therapy. CONCLUSION: Echo exam has a great utility for the diagnosis of cardiac disturbances in children with CRF, especially in cases with severe cardiac involvement and without cardiac symptoms; this investigation has to be performed right since the initial diagnosis, as well as for long-term surveillance.
Incubation of human peritoneal macrophages with cell free supernatants of mixed human lymphocyte cultures (MLC) renders them cytotoxic to labelled target tumour cells. The factor responsible for this effect is found as early as the second day of MLC. The production of this factor in man does not seem to require previous sensitization. In contrast with observations in mice, we have not yet demonstrated in man any clear-cut difference between the macrophage cytotoxicity index observed with supernatants from normal MLC and from MLC between the donor and the recipient of a skin allograft. Human blood monocytes can also be rendered cytotoxic by MLC acellular supernatants, but their cytotoxicity is neither as consistent nor as strong as with macrophages. This human factor does not render mouse macrophages cytotoxic.
In the territory of 5 anti-TBC dispensaries in the area of Bucharest 2 circumscriptions have been selected at random in which radiophotographic detection was to be carried out integrally and 2 other circumscriptions were selected for the investigation of groups at high risk of developing tuberculosis. All the new cases of active pulmonary tuberculosis that have been recorded, through all the methods in these 20 circumscriptions in 1973 were analized retrospectively and the reasons appeared that had determined their existence was mentioned or was ommitted on the occasion of previous investigations. These reasons were correlated with the data concerning the method for detection that had been employed, according to the indications of the tuberculosis dispensaries. In view of the evaluation of the degree of real covering of the population in integral rf investigations, the team of the Institute of Phtysiology investigated representative lots of population from each dispensary and checked the catagraphy of the population in the field, house-by-house. It was noted that 20--21% of the subjects that had been programmed for the integral rf examination (according to catagraphic criteria) were absent when the checking in the field, that should have been programmed, were not included in the catagraphy. On the basis of this study the methodology for radiophotographic detection for groups with risk of developing tuberculosis was established.

The authors present 15 cases of patients with pharyngo-oesophageal foreign bodies, of which 6 occurred in subjects with a normal, healthy oesophagus. In two cases the foreign bodies were eliminated spontaneously, one was extracted by endoscopy, two through cervicotomy and one through thoracotomy. The author stress the fact that dental prostheses are very rarely swallowed, and the deglutition of a live fish is mentioned --. In 7 patients the foreign body became struck in an old post-caustic oesophageal stenosis. In one of these patients the foreign body was extracted by thoracotomy, in 3 cases gastrostomy was performed, in 2 cases colo-oesophagoplasty was necessary and in one case the oeso-colic stenosis was recalibrated. The late results were excellent, excepting one case when the patient died a short time after surgery through a cerebral vascular accident. The therapeutic attitude was differentiated in relation with the condition of the oesophagus, the site of the foreign body and the time of hospitalization.
Lymphocytes from allograft recipient mice, stimulated in vitro by the donor strain cells, release a mediator (the macrophage activating factor of MAF) which is able to render cytotoxic normal macrophages. This work investigates the origin and characteristics of the MAF-producing sensitized lymphocytes. The congenitally athymic Nude mice sensitive to anti-0-serum plus complement, resistent to treatment with corticosteroid hormones and dependent of the presence of the thymus in adult life.
