Root dentine transparency: age determination of human teeth using computerized densitometric analysis.

Root dentine transparency (RDT) was used to estimate the ages of human subjects from 152 intact teeth. Teeth were from 134 subjects, both historical and recent, of known age and sex. The aims of this work are 1) to compare two methods of using RDT to estimate age; 2) to test the applicability of the regression formulae for estimating age obtained from a recent sample on an historical sample; and 3) to estimate the suitability of RDT to determine age at death of 100-year-old skeletons. RDT was measured by two techniques: 1) computerized densitometric analysis and 2) vernier caliper. Age estimations based on computerized densitometric analysis were no more accurate than were those determined by caliper measurement; both give a predictive success of +/- 5 years in about 45-48% of cases for premolars. The television-based digitization system has some disadvantages: It is expensive, not portable, and requires some training to use. However, it furnishes a more standardized method, a rapid graphic illustration of the results, and an immediate storage of statistical information for future use.

Age Determination by Teeth↗

Age determination in human adults by dental histology.

Dentine root transparency (RDT) has been measured on 70 histological sections of teeth from 46 individuals of known sex and age. In order to obtain the estimates of individual chronological age, Bang & Ramm (1970) equations have been applied to the value obtained by the measurements. Using the percentage ratio hx100/H (after Lemendin & Cambray 1981)--were h is the extension of the root transparency zone (in mm) and H is the total root length (in mm), some regression functions have been elaborated. The error of the age estimates obtained following Bang & Ramm was quite high in percentage, being comprised between +/- 5 years only in 21.13% of the cases.

Dermatoglyphic pattern of the 9p syndrome.

Dermatoglyphic data on six cases of 9p syndrome (trisomy of the short arm of chromosome 9), compared with those from the published literature, are presented. Some dermatoglyphic features appear to recur in all cases, suggesting their use in diagnosis.

Physical anthropology of Tarahumara Indians of northern Mexico.

During an anthropological mission in northern Mexico, 108 individuals of both sexes, belonging to the ethnic group of Tarahumara of the district of Norogachi were examined. Anthropometric characters and some physiological and medical data were taken. In this paper our anthropometric data are compared with those of the same population, taken in 1898 by Hrdlicka and in 1925-26 by Basauri. Thus it results that their cephalic index increased, while the reduction of their bizygomatic diameter shows a process of slenderization (according to Debetz). From a physiological point of view it is interesting to observe the high percentage of tasters of P.T.C. lowest concentration, the absence of evident dischromatopsies, the presence of a moderate eosinophilia probably due to parasitosis. Finally, it is opportune to observe the presence of blood in the urine of 15.7% of males, probably connected with a cultural factor, that is kick-ball foot race on long distances.
