Puzzling intrauterine insults.

Two male infants were noted at birth to have open wounds involving a forearm. These have been associated with abnormal bone modelling and growth. The cause of these appearances remains unclear and no similar cases have been reported.

The radiological features of Goltz syndrome: focal dermal hypoplasia. A report of two cases.

Two female infants with Goltz syndrome (focal dermal hypoplasia) were recently investigated in the Department of Radiology, The Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street for severe feeding problems and failure to thrive. Both demonstrated severe skeletal malformations and marked gastrooesophageal reflux with laxity of the hiatus. One child (case 1) exhibited nasal regurgitation during feeding. Interestingly, both children had undergone surgery; Case 1 or a right parasagittal abdominal hernia associated with focal dermal hypoplasia of the abdominal wall and Case 2 for an exomphalos also associated with dermal hypoplasia. This observation suggests a more widespread mesodermal abnormality.

Pulmonary interstitial emphysema--a radiological and pathological correlation.

The pathology and radiology of 19 cases of histologically proven pulmonary interstitial emphysema (PIE) were studied retrospectively. There was a good correlation between the pathological and radiological findings. Radiology therefore provides a useful indicator of early PIE which may allow more successful management and decreased morbidity and mortality.

'Hunt the thimble': a study of the radiology of ingested foreign bodies.

The role of radiology in the management of patients with a history of ingested foreign bodies is reviewed in a retrospective study over a 2-year period in a Children's Hospital. If radiography was confined to those children who have a clinical history suggestive of foreign body impaction in the oesophagus, a foreign body aspiration or having swallowed a button battery, the work load and unnecessary radiation arising from this practice could be halved. This study demonstrates another misuse of radiological services.
