[Incidence hepatitis C virus seroconversion after the implementation of a prevention and control program at a hemodialysis unit].

This study aimed at reporting the incidence of the hepatitis C virus as well as the prevention and control measures adopted in an hemodialysis unit. It is a prospective study developed with patients attended from September 1996 to December 1998 in an hemodialysis unit. The consultations from September 1996 to December 1996 were considered the control group and the ones from January 1997 to December 1998 the intervention group. Regarding the period of the control group, the routine of the unit was organized based on the regulation 2042 that systematizes the services of renal therapy. In the subsequent period, complementary measures were implemented. From 1997 to 1998, authors observed the reduction in the number of cases of hepatitis C.

[Fluid volume deficit: profile of defining characteristics in patients with burns].

The present study aimed at describing the profile of defining characteristics in patients with the nursing diagnosis "Fluid volume deficit" related to active loss of fluid secondary to burns. Data were collected by means of a tool, containing 29 possible defining characteristics of this diagnosis. Seven nurses, that worked at the Burnt Unit for at least five years ago, provided opinions about the degree to which each defining characteristic is indicative of this diagnosis. Nurses rated each defining characteristic of diagnosis being tested on a scale of zero to one. The results confirmed all, except one (increased body temperature) defining characteristics presented by NANDA for this diagnosis and indicated 10 new defining characteristics.

[The diagnostic process and how to teach it].

The subject of the present study is the teaching of the ability of diagnosing to nursing students. It has the general objective of verifying the adequacy of the elaboration of the analysis and synthesis process and its relation to the establishment of nursing diagnosis. After the development of the programmatic content of the Medical Nursing Discipline, students individually elaborated, facing a hypothetic situation, the diagnosis process (RISNER, 1986), obtaining a total of 106 diagnosis formulations (Taxonomy I of North American Nursing Diagnosis Association). The major difficulties were in the areas of "the establishment of relations and "data clustering". Authors suggest the stimulation of the development of the process of thinking inherent to analysis and synthesis since the beginning of undergraduate course.

[Function and role--a study of terminology].

In order to identify what the nursing professors think about the meanings of the words Function and Role, and their use, we elaborated a formulary and applied it at a nursing educational institution of the interior of São Paulo. From the sample of 23 people, we observed that several words are used meaning Function and Role, and sometimes they are also used as synonymous. We also perceived that in the literature reviewed, though some authors express that Role is related to status, to behaviour and Function is activity, atribution.
