[Surgical treatment of thyroid cancer].

A comparative analysis of the results of surgical treatment of 603 patients with malignant neoplasms of the thyroid gland before and after the accident at the Chernobyl atomic power station are presented. A very aggressive course of thyroid cancer in pediatric patients after the accident and the ensuing necessity to extend the indications for the performance of thyroidectomy with radical intervention on the regional lymph collectors are noted.

[Effect of tranquilizing agents on the blood level of endogenous ethanol in alcoholics].

Experiments on alcohol addicts blood were made to study the time course of the endogenous ethanol level after a single administration of mebicar (1.5 g), a derivative of bicyclic bisuria, 50 ml of 5% sodium hydroxybutyric syrup, a derivative of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid, and 20 mg diazepam, a derivative of 1,4-benzodiazepines. The clinical effect was recorded simultaneously. It was established that different tranquilizers stimulate the increase in the endogenous ethanol level as regards the spectrum of psychotropic activity. This effect was the most pronounced with mebicar and to a less measure with diazepam.

[Concentration of endogenous ethanol and alcoholic motivation].

Trials with patients suffering from stage II chronic alcoholism and normal test subjects as well as experiments made on male C57BL mice (with genetically determined alcoholic motivation) and CBA mice (with genetically determined alcoholic aversion) and random-bred male rats with different levels of initial alcoholic motivation have shown the presence of reverse proportional dependence between blood plasma endogenous ethanol and alcoholic motivation.

[Air microturbines for use in oral medicine].

Different design principles of turbine stomatological air tips, their advantages and shortcomings are described. The development of microturbines is analysed. Main approaches to their perfection are considered. The necessity to develop a joint comprehensive theory is emphasized.

[Effect of female sex steroids on levels of endogenous ethanol].

The authors presented the results of a study of the effect of female sex steroids on the level of endogenous ethanol. The time course of endogenous ethanol during the menstrual cycle was investigated. The concentration of endogenous ethanol was compared in the groups of women receiving and not receiving hormonal contraceptives. An increase in sex steroids during the menstrual cycle was accompanied by a decrease in the level of endogenous ethanol. The use of hormonal contraceptives caused an increase in the background concentration of endogenous ethanol. A possible effect of endogenous and exogenous female sex steroids on different levels of regulation of ethanol metabolism was assumed.
