[Psychohygienic programmes designed to help people prepare for old age (author's transl)].

Preparation for an active old age must include geropsychohygienic measures in order to maintain and promote psychic health up to the most advanced age. The scientific basis is provided by geropsychohygienic research. The use of psychohygienic programmes should concentrate on the segment of the working population which is approaching pensionable age and which has a relatively low level of qualification. But gradually all other age brackets should also be covered. The programmes should be based on modern gerohygienic and gerontopsychological findings. Relationships between ageing, environment and psychic health must be elucidated from various aspects, questions of planning one's life playing an important role here. All means of psychic training in the creative interaction between man and his environment must be set forth and utilized. The erroneous conviction still held by many that old age poses a drawback for such training must be refute. Under socialist conditions, the preservation of the senior citizen's full integration into society is part of the process of preparing for an active old age. He should also be made consciously aware of the esteem in which he is held by society and of the significance of his position. We hold the view that the integrated socialist educational system is a medium for putting psychohygienic preparation programmes into practical use. Apart from this, the process of preparing people for old age, which is a country-wide task, calls for cooperation between state-appointed managements, public bodies and representatives of different medical specialties.

[Preparing for old age, necessity, ways, content, limits (author's transl)].

International findings and our own results in gerohygienic sociogerontological, geriatric, medical epidemiological and psychogerontological research have positively confirmed the need for preparing for old age. Demographic data in the GDR has brought to light the growing need to put the preparation for an active old age into practive making use of research data and of the existing resources. The means of implementing the programme life in the overall resources of our developed socialist society, in our laws, in our well-organized public health system and above all in the industrial health protection service. It is shown that the society's potentials and the industrial health protection service, which operates on a country-wide scale, can have a positive influence on ageing and on life of old people. The ways in which this can be achieved are described. These ways are based on the main medical, psychological and social aspects of preparaing for old age. The existing limits must be taken into account when translating the schemes of preparation for old age into practice of socialist health protection. It is indispensable to concentrate on problems of focal importance. The preparation must first benefit factory workers exposed to health hazards. Medical preparation should come first, followed by psychological and social preparation. In the long term, preparation for old age must be integrated into the overall process of education and it must start at school, where it should be integrated into biology and civics classes. Such a process corresponds to the life-long process of ageing, to socialist principles and to the efforts of the public health system to preserve health, working capacity and joy of living up to a ripe old age.

[Basic theoretical approach to the long-term preparations for an active old age (author's transl)].

The authors single out the following principles as being especially important for the long-term preparations for an active old age: --Given our social conditions, the early and long-term preparation of young people for old age is a task facing the whole of society and one that can only be accomplished through an interdisciplinary approach. --Necessary changes in the attitude of young people towards old age and of older people towards the young can only be achieved through close contacts between young and old people. --In contacts between young and old people the emphasis should not be on help and care, but on mutual understanding and respect and the promotion of self-confidence. --In organizing their living and working conditions young and old people must cooperate in order to stimulate activity-promoting behavior at every stage of life.
