Sex differences and the effect of gonadectomy on morphine-induced antinociception and dependence in rats and mice.

1. Differences between sexes and the effect of bilateral surgical gonadectomy on the response to morphine analgesia and dependence were examined in rats and mice. 2. The analgesic response to morphine (5 mg/kg) was assessed by the hot plate and the abdominal constriction tests. Dependence was induced by injecting morphine at increasing doses (5-160 mg/kg) for 6 consecutive days and withdrawal signs elicited by injecting naloxone (2.5 mg/kg). 3. The base line reaction times in the intact control, sham-operated and gonadectomized animals of either sex were not significantly different from each other. 4. After treatment with morphine, the percentage increase in the reaction time in gonadectomized male and female rats and in gonadectomized male mice was significantly higher than in their respective controls. 5. The increase in the reaction time, after morphine treatment, was significantly higher in gonadectomized female rats than in gonadectomized male rats. 6. Naloxone-induced withdrawal signs in morphine-dependent gonadectomized rats and mice were not significantly different from those in sham-operated controls. However, female rats in both groups exhibited a significantly higher number of escape jumping responses than males.

Garlic revisited: therapeutic for the major diseases of our times?

Garlic may play an invaluable role in the prevention and therapy of the major causes of death. Anecdotal, basic, and clinical research data are confirming the efficacy of this herb in the treatment of hyperlipemia, cancer, heavy-metal intoxication, infectious diseases, hypertension, free-radical damage, and immune deficiency states. Garlic's broad antimicrobial spectra and its ability to modulate immunity may play a strategic role in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome pandemic. A review of the literature supports a greater scrutiny of this herb's therapeutic potential.

Role of surgery in the management of pulmonary sporotrichosis.

Management of four patients with sporotrichosis is summarized; one was treated medically and three were treated surgically. Thirty-seven cases from the literature are reviewed. The role of surgery in the management of pulmonary sporotrichosis is outlined as follows: (1) diagnosis of pulmonary infiltrates and/or pulmonary cavities of undetermined origin, (2) surgical intervention in patients with persistent infiltrates with cavitary lesions resulting from sporotrichosis, following failed medical treatment, and (3) resection of associated pulmonary cavitary lesions in patients in spite of adequte medical control of sporotrichosis. Surgical principles that must be observed in the management of pulmonary sporotrichosis follows:(1) Resection is the procedure of choice. The magnitude ranges from segmental resection to pneumonectomy. Clean resection is necessary. (2) Antifungal drug therapy--preferably with amphotericin B--is advisable preoperatively and postoperatively, since the major cause of late death is progression of the disease when clean resection has not been feasible. (3) Resection combined with drug therapy can be curative without increased risk in physiologically operable and anatomically resectable disease. (4) Thoracoplasty can be a lifesaving procedure for bilateral cavitary lesions with severe hemoptysis in patients with impaired pulmonary functions.

Surgical treatment of atypical pulmonary tuberculosis.

During a 12 year period from January 1962 to December 1973, 48 patients with atypical mycobacterial infection of the lung were treated surgically with excellent results. There were no deaths, and sputum conversion was achieved in all of them. The considerable drug resistance of the atypical mycobacteria and the possible ill effects of prolonged conservative treatment in cases with active disease and drug resistant organisms are pointed out. Early surgical treatment is recommended in such circumstances. Some bacterioligical and biological characteristics of atypical mycobacteria are also discussed.
