This paper presents the results obtained in an epidemiological survey conducted at Unidad de Pediatría del Hospital General de México, S.S.A., in 1,009 patients, randomly selected. The routine immunization schedule, followed in Mexico during the last few years was investigated. The results are presented for every one of the vaccines, according with the age periods. Considering the group as a whole, the results are significantly low, as far as the recommended standards pretend. It is concluded that it is necessary to strengthen the vaccination program in this country, in order to avoid the possibilities of new breaks of epidemics related with this marked lack of immunization in the community.
This paper presents the preliminary results of a prospective study undertaken at the Neonatal Unit of the Hospital General de México, S.S.A. (Méx.) conducted to evaluate the possibilities offered by the rooming-in system in this hospital. In both groups, having 250 patients, most of them eutrophic, it was noticed that none of the babies assisted by their mothers showed severe infections, as compared to four babies that showed clinical data compatible with septicemia; these babies were assisted in the nursery in a traditional way, but three of them died. Many of the aspects about the rooming-in system are reviewed, concerning the mothers as well as the babies, and it is finally determined that it is a practical, accessible system that optimizes resources and seems to offer immediate benefits to the mothers as well as to the babies.
This report is based on a review of the present situation of the sudden infant death syndrome through the presentation of four cases studied at the Unidad de Pediatría, Hospital General de México, S.S.A. All cases were in apparent good health before death. All babies were less than ten months of age. In three cases, necropsy was not performed, and the other one did not show significant abnormalities at the post-mortem examination. A complete review of the literature was made including: historical, epidemiological, genetic, clinical and pathological aspects. Special emphasis is made on the pathophysiology of the syndrome during MOR phase of sleep and muscular hypertrophy of the lungs arteriolae suggesting chronic hypoxia which are the most relevant theories in the sudden infant death syndrome. Psychological aspects and the family management by the physician and detection of possible future victims of the syndrome are finally discussed.
The purpose of this paper is to report a boy with a typical case of anhydrotic ecotdermal dysplasia, spina bifida occulat, and abnormal dermatoglyphics. Histologic studies of the skin showed absence of sebaceous and sweat gland and hair follicles. The clinical examination of the mother and the histopathological report of her skin suggests sex linked transmission; however, an autosomal dominat gene limited to males can not be excluded.
