World survey of typhoid and paratyphoid-B phages types.

The results achieved through international co-operation in the field of enteric phage typing and the methods by which these results were obtained are reviewed. The data are derived mainly from reports submitted by the author to the International Committee for Enteric Phage Typing (ICEPT) on the occasion of its meetings during the Fifth and Sixth International Congresses for Microbiology. Phage typing of S. typhi and S. paratyphi B are examined, and the progress achieved since the inception of the ICEPT is discussed. The necessity of calculating frequency distribution of types by foci is emphasized, and the author gives a summary of the results of surveys of the geographical distribution of typhoid and paratyphoid-B phage types.

The provisional international standard antityphoid serum.

The Provisional International Standard Antityphoid Serum, prepared in 1935, provided standards of the O and the Vi antibodies, both contained in a single serum preparation, and was used for standardizing the potency of therapeutic antityphoid serum. The "Provisional Standard Serum for Vi Agglutination", which is one of the series of proposed Standard Agglutinating Sera for Typhoid and Paratyphoid A and B Fevers, is based on the Provisional International Standard Antityphoid Serum. It is recommended that the Provisional International Standard Antityphoid Serum, in conjunction with a standard typhoid vaccine, be used in the test for the determination of the "functional efficacy" of the Vi antibody. This is one of the several tests recommended for the official control of the immunizing potency of typhoid vaccines.

Proposed standard agglutinating sera for typhoid and paratyphoid A and B fevers.

The preparation of seven Standard Agglutinating Sera considered suitable to serve as international standard preparations for use in the serodiagnosis of typhoid and paratyphoid infections are described, and proposals are made for their further examination on a collaborative international basis.Details are given of antigenic materials and immunizing procedures which should suffice to enable substandards, based on the proposed International Standards, to be prepared locally. With the aid of the proposed Standard Agglutinating Sera it is possible to determine the "Standard Agglutinin Titre" of a serum under examination by any technique of the agglutination test, provided that a suspension of average sensitivity is employed.
