Inflammatory periodontal destruction includes periodontal bone destruction. In addition to etiologic factors which contribute to the formation of gingival pockets, cell-mediated immune reactions apparently play a special role in osteoclastic processes. Apart from coincidental events, the form of osteoclasia is influenced in the beginning by the form and position of the tooth. Vertical osteoclasia, a variant form, is more frequently observed in connection with juvenile periodontitis. Occlusal periodontal trauma and general primary diseases may possibly also influence the pattern of periodontal bone destruction.
The possibilities of and devices for motivating good oral hygiene in patients with periodontal disease were discussed briefly. Recognition of the first signs of periodontal disease appears to be particularly important. Even if treatment for periodontal disease is successful, the chance of it developing again is high if the patient is not motivated to maintain good oral hygiene. According to the author, only a small portion of the motivation provided by the dentist can be replaced by audiovisual aids.
This is a report concerning the feasibility of using gingivitis caused by neglect of usual oral hygiene for testing the pharmacological effects of anti-inflammatory agents. An unexpected difficulty is presented by the inability to reproduce the height of increase of the SB-index during repetition of the experiment after interruption of oral hygiene for one week.

The clinical changes of the gingiva reported in the literature (gingival hyperplasia and new growths like the pregnancy epulis) in connection with oral hormonal contraception as well as the causal connection between sexual hormone activity and the changes of gingiva and oral mucosa are discussed. Our own experiments show that the increase in the sulcus fluid flow rate under administration of combination preparations is largely independent of an increase in the degree of gingival inflammation.
