Electron spin resonance studies of dental composites: effects of irradiation time, decay over time, pulverization, and temperature variations.

Polymerization induced by UV-VIS light of composite dental materials produces a solid matrix within which terminal radicals of non-polymerized monomers remain trapped. Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) allowed three different types of radicals to be identified. The analysis of ten normally available commercial products gave information on: (1) the propagation of the conversion reaction as a result of exposure to light; (2) the time necessary for the decay of each type of radical; and (3) the variations with temperature and the effects of shattering on the materials under study. The presence of inorganic filling material slowed the process of polymerization, while it accelerated the decay of radicals. It was suggested that the nature of these processes depended on the composition of the base resin materials, whereas it did not depend on the sizes of the filler particles. Moreover, the complete propagation of the conversion reaction needed a period of light exposure greater than that currently suggested by the manufacturers. The structural stability and the resistance of the composites were confirmed by both the long period of decay and the high temperatures needed to overcome the potential barrier for starting the radical decay process. Finally, the composite shattering investigation indicated that particles removed by surface abrasion experience rapid radical decay, thus reducing the possibility of harmful effects on internal organs.

[Endoscopic recanalization with alcohol in the treatment of dysphagia of neoplastic origin].

Nineteen patients with dysphagia were treated by endoscopic injection of ethanol, to induce tumoral necrosis. Dysphagia was present in patients with inoperable, unresectable or recurrent esophagogastric cancer. Prior treatment, patients had a mean dysphagia grade of 3.22. After the first session, they had a mean of 2.05. An optimum dysphagia grade mean was 1.47. The period intertreatment was X 45 days. There were no complications associated with the method. The results suggest this therapy is a good palliative procedure that, in a short time and with a low cost, can improve the life quality in selected patients.

[Helicobacter pylori in Barrett esophagus].

The authors evaluated the prevalence of colonize by Helicobacter Pylori in 21 adults patients with Barrett's esophagus; 12 males and 9 females; with ranges of age from 21 to 81 years and a medium of 56.4 years old. It was detected in 23.8% that Helicobacter Pylori was positive in Barrett's esophagus, being quite higher, 26.6% in patients over 50 years old. In the five cases with positive Helicobacter Pylori, the Barrett esophagus presented a fundic gastric mucosa and no one intestinal metaplasia. Helicobacter Pylori was not seen in esophageal biopsies from patients with reflux esophagitis without Barrett's esophagus. The clinical value of the Helicobacter Pylori finding in Barrett's esophagus and its importance of the following at long term must be explained and studied in the future, by the evaluation in numerous patients groups and prolonged follow-up.

[A case of follicular carcinoma of the thyroid gland, with uptaking metastases, treated with surgery and isotope therapy].

A short review of the relevant literature is followed by the presentation of a case of follicular cancer of the thyroid with uptaking spinal metastases. Five months after almost total thyroidectomy for right macrofollicular goitre and left follicular cancer, a 131-I scintiscan showed uptake in the right lobe of the thyroid and IX and X dorsal vertabrae. Resection of the remainder of the thyroid was followed by the administration of 100 and then 150 mC of 131-I. The result at 10 months was satisfactory, though not final; no uptake at the Xth vertebra, reduced uptake at the IXth, disappearance of subjective and objective symptoms of spinal pain.

Mapping of intrinsic bent DNA sites in the upstream region of DNA puff BhC4-1 amplified gene.

We have identified bent DNA sites in the distal and proximal DNA puff BhC4-1 amplified gene promoter region of Bradysia hygida. The 2D modeling of the 3D DNA path and the ENDS ratio values calculated in this promoter region resulted in the identification of ten pronounced bent sites named BhC4B - 9 to + 1. The 1847 bp fragment (- 3697 to - 1850) in relation to the transcription start site shows multiple bending sites, BhC4B - 9 to BhC4B - 4, with periodicity approximately 300 bp. The analysis of the other identified bent region, starting at position - 957, reveals that the BhC4B + 1 bent site colocalizes with the putative BhC4-1 minimal promoter. The sequence analysis of bent site BhC4B - 4 shows a distribution of dA*dT at approximately 10 bp intervals between the middle of each tract, but intervals with more than one turn, approximately 20 bp, two helix turns, were detected in the other bent sites described here. The bent sites BhC4B - 6 and BhC4B - 4, contain two consensus sequences, with 60 bp each. The apparent molecular weight of fragments in the BhC4-1 promoter region were estimated in agarose gels and compared with the data obtained in polyacrylamide gels without and with ethidium bromide. The mobility reduction ratios (R-values) were determined, and a high R-value, 1.80, for a 1215 bp fragment in the distal promoter region and a 1.23 significant R-value for a 662 bp fragment in the proximal segment were found. To further analyze the predicted bent DNA sites in these fragments, the 2D trajectories of the 3D DNA path and other parameters, AT percentage, roll angle, ENDS ratio and DeltaG, were determined. The role of these bent sites in the BhC4-1 transcription regulation is discussed.

Fine needle aspiration cytology of parathyroid adenoma. A review of seven cases.

The value of fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology in the diagnosis of parathyroid adenomas was demonstrated by a cytohistologic review of seven cases. The cytologic patterns, which were characterized by numerous, mostly isolated epithelial cells and naked nuclei showing anisokaryosis and multiple nucleoli, were consistent with the histologic findings in this neoplasm, which should be considered in the differential (FNA) diagnosis of masses in the neck region. The only diagnostic problem is its differentiation from follicular thyroid neoplasms.

[Priapism. Etiopathogentic, clinical and therapeutic considerations].

The aetiopathogenesis and clinical picture of 3 cases of priapism are described, along with the treatment employed. The first patient suffered from thalassaemia minor, whereas in the second case priapism was a manifestation of aneurysm of the abdominal aorta perforated in the cava. In the last case, erection was a sequela of surgery for hydrocoele performed under peridural anaesthesia.
