Vascular dementia in the Lundby study. 1. A prospective, epidemiological study of incidence and risk from 1957 to 1972.

In this study, a total population, the 1957 Lundby cohort, was investigated with regard to the incidence of vascular dementia over a 15-year period, and to provide a succeeding study with basic data concerning the background factors for vascular dementia. The 1957 cohort comprises 2,612 persons who were registered in the geographically delimited Lundby area on July 1, 1957. The lifetime risk of developing vascular dementia was found to be 34.5% in men and 19.4% in women when all degrees of impairment were taken into account, the preponderance for the male sex being very obvious.

Senile dementia of the Alzheimer type in the Lundby Study. I. A prospective, epidemiological study of incidence and risk during the 15 years 1957-1972.

In spite of the great impact of senile dementia of the Alzheimer type (SDAT) on society, far too little is known about its epidemiology. In this study of a total, normal population from a geographically delimited area in Sweden, Lundby, 2612 persons were examined in 1957 by one psychiatrist (Hagnell). In 1972 the same population was reexamined irrespective of domicile. The incidence and risk of contracting SDAT during the 15 years were calculated. No cases of SDAT were diagnosed before the age of 60 years. The lifetime risk was for men 25.7% and for women 26.2%. When only the very severely impaired were taken into account, the figures were 14.5% in men and 14.6% in women.

Nucleotide sequence of cauliflower mosaic virus DNA.

The complete nucleotide sequence (8024 nucleotides) of the circular double-stranded DNA of cauliflower mosaic virus has been established. The DNA molecule is known to possess three discrete single-stranded discontinuities, often referred to as "gaps," two in one strand and one in the other. The sequence data indicate that gap 1, the single discontinuity in the alpha strand, corresponds to the absence of no more than one or two nucleotides with respect to the complementary beta strand. The two discontinuities in the beta strand, however, are not authentic gaps since no nucleotides are missing, but are instead regions of sequence overlap: a short sequence (19 residues for gap 2, t least 2 residues for gap 3) at one terminus of each discontinuity, probably the 5' terminus, is displaced from the double helix by an identical sequence at the other boundary of the discontinuity. Analysis of the distribution of nonsense codons in the DNA sequence is consistent with other evidence that only the alpha strand is transcribed. The coding region extends around the circular molecule from 4 map units of gap 1, the map origin, to map position 91, and consists of six long open reading frames. Our findings suggest, but do not prove, that the DNA sequence of the open reading frames is colinear with viral protein sequences. The cistron for the viral coat protein, which is probably synthesized in the form of a precursor, has been situated in coding region IV on the basis of its unusual amino acid composition.

Formation of ribosome-RNA initiation complexes with alfalfa mosaic virus RNA 4 and RNA 3.

RNA 4 of alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV) is a monocistronic messenger for the coat protein. We have determined the sequence of the 40 +/- 2 nucleotides in RNA 4 that were protected in the initiation complex formed with wheat germ 80 S ribosomes from digestion by T1 or pancreatic ribonucleases. The AUG coat protein initiation codon was near the middle of this protected region. We have found two ribosome-binding sites in RNA 3. The principal one, near the 5' end, is the initiation site for the major translation product, a 35,000 dalton protein. The second site binds ribosomes only weakly, at the beginning of the "silent" coat protein cistron, and is similar but not identical to the initiation site protection site is discussed.

[Cytogenetic studies after contact with juvenile blastic leukemias].

Persons with long professionell contact to acute childhood leukemia and first-degree relatives had a higher tendency of chromosome bursting off in the metaphases from cultivated lymphocytes. Since persons with contact and relatives for one thing and controls for another showed significant differences in the degree of hurtibility of metaphases, cultivation ane preparation could not be responsible for themselves. It is discussed whether the contact to childhood leukemia may lead to any reaction between peripheral lymphocytes and an infectious agent. This reaction itself leads to a higher susceptibility of metaphases from peripheral lymphocytes to the injuring laboratory conditions.

Cardiac-gated MR angiography of pulsatile flow: k-space strategies.

Signal strength in time-of-flight magnetic resonance (MR) angiography of pulsatile flow is modulated by the time-varying intraluminal magnetization strength. The specific appearance of MR angiographic images therefore depends on the relationship of different phase-encoding steps to the pulsatile flow waveform. Cardiac-phase gating can be applied with phase-encoding reordering to acquire different regions of k-space during the desired phases of the cardiac cycle. The authors have developed a simulation program for evaluating the merits of different encoding strategies for pulsatile flow. The model was validated with phantom studies. High signal intensity relative to that in conventional MR angiographic studies can be attained with strategies that impose relatively small penalties in total acquisition time.

[Recommendations for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases in clinical practice. Belgian Working Group on Prevention of Ccardiovascular Diseases].

These recommendations are largely based on the Executive Summary of the "European Guidelines on Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Clinical Practice" proposed by the "Third Joint Task Force of European and other Societies on Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Clinical Practice". The model used to assess the overall risk was adapted for Belgium. Otherwise, very few things were changed from the Executive Summary of the European Guidelines.
