In an attempt to describe the use and usefulness of closed-circuit televisions (C.C.T.V), a preliminary follow-up study of 27 veterans was undertaken by the Western Blind Rehabilitation Center. The veterans had been loaned C.C.T.V.'s by the Veterans Administration and represented a wide range of ages, backgrounds, and pathologies. On the basis of the present data, it is concluded that C.C.T.V. significantly improve the functioning of the majority of users and that this improvement appears to be a long-term benefit.
Two hundred and forty-seven samples were taken from various areas within an abattoir and the levels of Staphylococcus aureus determined. Sixty-one phage patterns were found in the 141 samples containing coagulase-positive staphylococci. The incidence of coagulase positive staphylococci increased as processing progressed. Articles such as mesh gloves, hands and aprons which were either difficult to effectively clean or maintained at elevated temperatures harboured the greatest numbers of staphylococci. Over 50% of the positive samples contained multiple phage patterns of staphylococci.

Tumors arising from veins are rare, usually present with nonspecific clinical and imaging findings and almost universally show histology of leiomyosarcoma. This twentieth reported case of primary renal vein leiomyosarcoma demonstrates invasion of the renal vein with endoluminal propagation of tumor into the infrahepatic inferior vena cava (IVC), an unreported manifestation. The combination of CT, ultrasound, and angiographic studies allowed differentiation from renal cell carcinoma by suggesting a tumor arising from the renal vein.
Two patients with pseudocoarctation complicated by dissection are presented. They are the first cases in which pseudocoarctation with dissection have been imaged by magnetic resonance (MR). MR imaging is an excellent noninvasive modality in the evaluation of dissection in pseudocoarctation of the aorta.
Two cases are presented in which anomalies of the inferior vena cava were associated with horseshoe kidneys. Radiological demonstration of such combined variation is rare, only one case of duplicated inferior vena cava with horseshoe kidney having been found in the literature. The embryological basis for these anomalies is reviewed. A possible explanation for their coexisting occurrence is also speculatively raised.
Autosomal dominant Stargardt-like macular dystrophy is one of the early onset macular dystrophies. It is characterized clinically in its early stages by visual loss and by the presence of atrophic macular changes with or without the presence of yellowish flecks. It is an important retinal dystrophy to study, not only because it has implications in the care and treatment of patients with the condition, but because it also provides important information regarding retinal function. Review of the literature suggests that many of the reported families are linked to chromosome 6q. Genetic and genealogical evidence suggests that these families have descended from a common ancestor or founder. The recent identification of a disease-causing gene that is involved in fatty acid metabolism may have implications in the study of the more common age-related macular degeneration. We review the recent clinical, genetic, and genealogical aspects of autosomal dominant Stargardt-like macular dystrophy.
