Effects of abscisic Acid treatment on the thermostability of the photosynthetic apparatus in barley chloroplasts.

Thermostability of the photosynthetic apparatus of abscisic acid (ABA)-treated seedlings of barley (Hordeum vulgare) was studied by light-scattering and by fluorescence measurements of isolated chloroplasts. ABA treatment markedly decreased heat damage of the chloroplast ultrastructure; an exogenous ABA concentration of 10(-5) molar was most effective. Heat-induced increase of the 77 kilodalton fluorescence ratio F(740)/F(685) was also smaller at this ABA concentration. The heat-induced increase of the initial chlorophyll fluorescence level (F(o)) was virtually eliminated in ABA-treated (10(-5) molar) chloroplasts up to 45 degrees C and slightly increased at 50 degrees C, relative to control chloroplasts where F(o) increased even at 35 degrees C and reached its maximal value at 45 degrees C. In control chloroplasts, F(o) increased with a 5-minute pretreatment temperature, an effect observed as low as 35 degrees C. F(o) was maximal at 45 degrees C. In contrast, chloroplasts treated with 10(-5) molar ABA did not exhibit a heat-induced increase in F(o) until 50 degrees C.

[Fatal outcome of acute myocardial infarction in men and women].

An epidemiologic study of the outcomes of acute myocardial infarction, carried out according to the WHO Register of Acute Myocardial Infarction, demonstrated that overall mortality rates are similar for men and women between 20 and 69 years of age. Prehospital mortality was significantly higher in men, as compared to women, while the opposite was true for hospital mortality. Overall, prehospital and hospital mortality rates were relatively high in the younger patients, both male and female, an evidence of a more severe course of acute myocardial infarction at a younger age.

[Morphofunctional characterization of the immune system in ovine adenomatosis].

In sheep with adenomatosis, enhanced activity is exhibited by both the central and peripheral organs of immunity. Histologic manifestations of this in the thymus include blast transformation of the T and B zones, numerous mitoses, elevated numbers of unicellular thymus corpuscles, and accumulations of thymocytes around these corpuscles and capillaries, while in the lymph nodes and spleen they include many mitoses in the reactive centers of lymphatic follicles and in the mentle and marginal zones, and increased numbers of lymphocytes, neutrophils, plasma cells, and PAS-positive cells. The intensified functioning of lymphoid tissues combines with very pronounced phagocytic reactions in the immune organs and pulmonary parenchyma and with adenomatous proliferation.

[Incidence of sudden death cases in acute coronary insufficiency and acute myocardial infarction at the pre-hospital stage in Krasnoyarsk].

The impact of improvements in prehospital cardiologic service on total and prehospital mortality associated with acute coronary insufficiency (ACI) and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and the causes of fatal outcomes is illustrated by a study based on the acute myocardial infarction register involving populations from two city districts between 20 and 69 years of age. Prehospital mortality caused by ACI and AMI is shown to decline with the progress of cardiologic care. The decline is attributed to reduced incidence of some causes of death, such as heart failure and cardiogenic shock. Sudden coronary death (85.1%) remains the principal cause of prehospital mortality.

[Myocardial infarct morbidity among men and women in Krasnoyarsk from the viewpoint of age].

A comparative analysis of the time course of age-related acute myocardial infarction incidence rates among men and women was based upon the results of an epidemiological study in Krasnoyarsk. Myocardial infarction incidence rates in men aged 20 to 69 (general as well as primary and secondary infarction incidence) were twice as high as in women of the same age. The time course of primary and secondary myocardial infarction incidence had common regularities. Under 60, incidence rates in men were higher than in women, over 60 just the opposite. Incidence rates in younger age groups were higher than in older age groups. No growth in the general morbidity of myocardial infarction was established in the period of the study. However its significant growth in men aged 50 to 59 ("rejuvenation" of myocardial infarction) was revealed.
