[Action of carcinogenesis promoters on the adhesive force of cells in the liver, lung and thyroid gland in rats and mice].

The short-term effects of the carcinogenesis promoters on the adhesive force of cells are compared with the data from literature on their ability to exert a promoter action on the carcinogenesis development in the same organs during prolonged introduction after an initiator. The ability of substances to decrease the adhesive force in the tissue below the resistance threshold is established to correlate with its promoter activity. The coincidence of tissue specificity of both effects and active doses of substances is observed.

[Effect of hemodynamic disorders on the transepithelial potential of the rat liver in vivo].

The presence of transepithelial electrical potential (TEP) formed on the border between the interstitium and the interior of the rat liver bile capillary has been demonstrated. The initial TEP value (II+ 3 mV) reduced rapidly to zero after the ligation of different portal fissure vessels, while ischemia arrest led to TEP restoration. True periodical oscillations of TEP value with the period and amplitude of about 30 s and 1-2 mV, respectively, were registered. These oscillations appeared in all cases of liver ischemia 5-7 min after ischemia removal and lingered till the end of the experiment. It was assumed that variations in TEP and membrane potential of hepatocytes have the common nature.

[Prolonged changes in hormonal homeostasis after brief circulatory arrest in the small intestine].

It has been established that temporary cessation of blood circulation in the rat small intestine induces alterations in the levels of thyroid and glucocorticoid hormones. These alterations are of the wavy character and can be traced up to 2 weeks after the operation that correlates with duration of previously found functional biochemical, and morphological changes.

[Tissue-specific inhibition of DNA synthesis by contactins, factors that possess tissue-specific adhesive activity].

Highly purified factors extracted from the liver and lungs of adult rats, tissue-specifically increasing the stability of intercellular contacts and of cell plasma membranes to mechanical disruption, were found to decrease, in the same manner, the labeling index (LI) in explants of the embryonic tissue of mice. The comparison of the action of these factors on the LI, and on mechanical properties of the tissue has shown that the latter effect is manifested earlier than the former one.

Ion permeability and strength of cell contacts: ion permeability and mechanical properties of cell contacts in small intestine epithelium.

The effects of several simple parameters (pH, concentration of bivalent cations, osmotic pressure, and temperature) on the ion permeability and mechanical properties of cell contacts have been investigated. It has been shown that the mechanical properties of a cell contact make it possible to describe it as a viscoelastic system. The main contribution to cell adhesion is made by the tight junction. Two populations of acidic centers have been identified on the cell membrane surface. One population interacts with bivalent cations to assure cell adhesion. The other population of weaker acidic centers regulating ion permeation is involved in the cell membrane's interaction of the repulsion type. An intimate correlation has been established between changes in passive transepithelial ion permeability and cell adhesion in response to changes in pH and in bivalent cation concentration. Such a correlation is possible if the tight junction is the principal contributor to the passive ion permeability and mechanical strength of the cell contacts.

[Effect of the tissue-specific lung adhesive factor on the urethane induction of pulmonary adenomas in mice].

The effect of adhesive factor (AF), urethane and their combination on the mechanical properties of lung tissue (this effect was assessed by the nuclei isolation during a standard dispersion procedure) and on adenoma induction was studied. As shown, the AF doses eliminating the primary action of urethane on the mechanical properties of the tissue significantly decreased the incidence of adenomas. High AF doses producing a contrary effect on the mechanical properties of the tissue failed to eliminate the primary effect of urethane and did not decrease the number of adenomas induced by urethane.

[Tissue-specific depression of DNA synthesis by calcium salt-free liver and lung extracts that are able to increase the stability of cell linkage in the tissue].

The macromolecular fraction of Ca-free salt extracts (Ca-FSE) removed from lungs and liver of adult rats, mice and fishes inhibits DNA synthesis in the embryonic tissue. The effect of Ca-FSE is tissue-specific rather than species-specific. Ca-FSE was earlier reported to increase with the same specificity the tissue stability to mechanical disruption. A concept is proposed that the tissue-specific adhesive factor may play the role of G1-chalone in epithelial tissue.
