Ten-year results of the treatment of primary operable breast carcinoma: A summary of 304 patients evaluated by the TNM system.

After all records of patients with breast cancer who received primary treatment at Memorial Hospital in 1960 were reviewed, 304 women with operable, infiltrating carcinoma were identified and classified clinically according to the TNM system of the American Joint Committee for Cancer Staging and End Results Reporting. There were 66 patients (22%) classified under Stage I, 176 (58%) under Stage II, and 62 (20%) under Stage III. There were 82 patients (27%) in whom the nodal status was misclassified clinically. The observed 10-year survival was 59.7%. The 10-year end results (with 95% confidence limits) diminished significantly in relation to advancing clinical stage of disease--90.9% (+/-6.9%) for Stage I, 57.1% (+/-7.3%) for Stage II, and 33.9% (+/-11.8%) for Stage III patients. The 10-year survival in patients with pathologically negative axillary nodes was 71.5%, and in the patients with pathologically positive axillary nodes, 48.3%.

The uptake of gallium 67 in colonic macrophages.

A case is presented in which a patient with a well-differentiated adenocarcinoma showed high gallium concentration in the segment with melanosis coli proximal to the obstruction. Although in this case the Gallium was associated with an increased number of faecal pigment containing macrophages it is unlikely that macrophages are the main factor in tumour uptake of Gallium compounds.

Uptake of gallium-67 in colonic and rectal tumours.

The uptake of (67)Ga in biopsy specimens of normal and abnormal tissue was measured in 20 cases of colonic and rectal disease and the ratio between the (67)Ga uptake in these diseases and in the normal colon or rectum was determined. Uptake of the isotope was high in most of the 14 primary malignant tumours, being highest in poorly differentiated tumours. This uptake was found to be concentrated at the active tumour edge. Uptake of the isotope was generally low in non-malignant lesions.

Danazol treatment of advanced breast cancer.

Danazol, an effective agent in the treatment of benign breast disease, has been administrated to 41 patients with advanced breast cancer. These patients were treated with danazol for periods ranging from 1 to 40 weeks and responses were seen in seven of 41 (17%) patients. No responses were seen in the four premenopausal patients treated. Side effects were seen in nine of 41 (22%) patients, but in most patients these stopped when the dose of danazol was reduced. This preliminary study indicates that danazol may be an effective form of hormone treatment in patients with advanced breast cancer.
