[The development of a quantitative method for the in vivo determination of the adhesive activity of Vibrio cholerae].

The dynamics of the distribution and adhesion of V. cholerae in the intestine of suckling rabbits has been studied. The quantitative method for the in vivo determination of the adhesive activity of V. cholerae has been developed with the use of suckling rabbits as an experimental model. The method may be used for the determination of V. cholerae virulence and the pathogenesis of cholera.

[Potential use of serological methods in detecting cholera toxin].

In the study of 50 Vibrio cholerae museum strains, 45 of them producing cholerigenic effect in suckling rabbits, cholera toxin, determined by means of the passive immune hemolysis (PIH) test, has been detected in the supernatant of the culture fluid of only two strains: V. cholerae 569 B, a well-known producer of cholera toxin, and V. cholerae (eltor) 1310, from whose population a toxigenic variant has been obtained by selection. To study the capacity of V. cholerae for producing toxin in vitro, in six cholerigenic strains, besides the supernatant of their culture fluids, also protein fractions, cell lysates and membrane fractions have been studied in the PIH test. In all these strains cholera toxin has been detected only in membrane fractions, which should be taken into consideration in the serological evaluation of the toxigenicity of V. cholerae.

[Importance of the vibriocinogenic factor in the ecology of Vibrio cholerae].

The relationship between 433 V. cholerae strains and 571 enterobacterial strains, isolated from different ecosystems, have been studied by the method of "delayed antagonism". The direct correlation between the virulence of V. cholerae and the width of the spectra of their antagonistic activity towards indicator bacteria was detected. The expediency of studies on the role of the vibriocinogenic factor in the survival of V. cholerae in different ecological systems is substantiated.

Allomonads - a new group of microorganisms of the Vibrionaceae family.

A total of 24 strains of microorganisms with basic marks relating them to the family of Vibrionaceae were isolated from human faeces, liquid sewage and waters of surface reservoirs contaminated with sewage. The study of biological, cultural and biochemical characteristics, determination of phenotypic similarity according to Adanson-Sneath, investigation of DNA composition and extent of DNA hybridization by the methods of gene taxonomy induced us to establish taxonomic independence of the discovered strains at the level of the genus Allomonas gen. nov. with so far the only species A. enterica sp. nov.

[NAG-vibrio serovar 2 causing a generalized infection].

A case of septicemia caused by NAG-vibrio, serovar 2, is described. In contrast to other vibrios, the strain under study was immobile at the moment of isolation and, when introduced enterally into suckling rabbits, showed the capacity of causing generalized infection.

[Allomonas--a new group of microorganisms of the Vibrionaceae family. I. Research methods and preliminary results of differention from aeromonads and vibrios].

The comparative study of 95 strains of Aeromonas, Plesiomonas and various Vibrio species by 49 characteristics (disregarding those common to all representatives of the Vibrionaceae family) allowed to distinguish a separate group of microorganisms differing from Aeromonas by 17 characteristics, from Plesiomonas by 13 characteristics and from Vibrio by 7 characteristics. The new microogranism was provisionally named Allomonas. The taxonomic study of the new microorganism continues.

[Distribution of NAG vibrios of different serovars among persons and environmental objects in the Crimean region].

A total of 38 serovars have been found in the territory of the Crimea: 35 in humans and 34 in various environmental objects; of these, 4 serovars (17, 21, 27, 35) have been isolated only from humans, and 3 serovars (4, 20, 33) only from sewage water. NAG vibrio serovars isolated predominantly from patients and vibriocarriers were serovars 2, 5, 7, 10, 17, 39, 47 and 50. These serovars also caused the severe and nearly severe course of infection. A pronounced focal character of NAG vibrio infection and an essential role of everyday contracts in the transmission of NAG vibrios are pointed out.

[Allomonads, a new group of microorganisms of the Vibrionaceae family. III. Taxonomic analysis of the similarities between allomonads and other genera of the family].

24 strains of Gram-negative bacilli with the polar location of flagellae, oxidase positive, releasing no gas in the process of glucose fermentation in aerobic and anaerobic conditions in the High-Leifson test, belonging to the family Vibrionaceae, were isolated from the feces of healthy persons, polluted water and sewage. Analysis by the method of numerical taxonomy revealed that these strains were essentially different from all other members of this family, and 19 of them formed a sharply defined group on the S-0,85 level, tentatively named Allomonas enterica comb. nov. Strain No. 40 (16-11-12), defined as a phenotype, is available from the USSR Collection of Type Cultures (Tarasevich State Research Institute for Standardization and Control of Medical Biological Preparations, Moscow) as No. 17.

[Serovars of NAG vibrios isolated from the water of open reservoirs].

Composition of serological types of NAG-vibrios isolated from the river water contaminated by effluents was found to be more varied than in uncontaminated water body. Vibrios of serological types 6, 8, 39, 41, 50, 53, 55 revealed frequently and in great amounts apparently inhabit the mentioned water bodies for prolonged periods.

[Preservation of cholerogenicity in cholera vibrios in the incomplete L-cycle stage].

The work presents the characteristics of the forms appearing as a result of the incomplete L cycle of Vibrio cholerae obtained in experimental conditions after the cultivation of typical V. eltor strain, serovar Ogawa, for 5 months at room temperature in sterile river water without subculturing. The culture formed shaprly changed L-similar colonies, had decreased agglutinability and was resistant to diagnostic cholera phages, but retained its cholerogenicity for suckling rabbits. A suggestion was made concerning the possible epidemiological significance of such forms and the necessity of their detection in the course of bacteriological analysis for cholera.

[Use of the A-2 elective medium for the differentiation of Aeromonas from related microorganisms].

The trial of culture medium A-2, proposed for the identification of Aeromonas on the basis of the nutritional utilization of gelatin as the only source of nitrogen and starch as the source of carbon in view of the limited content of mineral components in the medium, revealed that no other species of the family Vibronaceae grew in this medium, and it could be used in an additional test for the differentiation of vibrios from Aeromonas. A group of strains isolated from human feces, surface water and sewage was found to be incapable of growing in culture medium A-2; these strains, though having a number of characteristics in common with Aeromonas, differed from them in a number of additional tests.

[Makeup of a population El Tor vibrios according to their agglutinability by type-specific sera].

The authors studied population composition of 14 strains of EL Tor vibrios. Of 7 strains of Ogava serological type the population composition was homogeneous in 2, and heterogeneous in 5. All the 7 strains of EL Tor vibrios of Inaba serological type had homogeneous population composition. Changes of the existence conditions of EL Tor vibrios of Ogava serological type, containing in their population 5% cells of Hikoshima serological tupe, led to separation of the cells of Inaba serological type; under the same conditions, in El Tor vibrios of Ogava and Inaba serological type with homogeneous population the latter was stable.

[Effect of sulfide water from natural springs on the properties of Vibrino cholerae].

The authors studied the properties of E1 Tor cholera vibrios isolated from sulfide water of the natural sources. There was demonstrated under experimental and natural conditions the influence of ecological conditions of sulfide water on such vibrio properties as cholerogenicity, sensitivity to diagnostic and typing phages, hemolytic activity and the value of the hemolysin-destructive factor. A short-liver stay of cholera vibrios in sulfide water was accompanied by some reduction of their virulence.

[Serological typing of Vibrios, nonagglutinating with O-cholera serum, isolated in USSR].

The authors carried out serological typing of 2008 strains of NAG vibrios isolated in 1968--1975 in 18 territories of the Soviet Union from humans and from the objects of environment. Serological type was established in 40.5% of the srains isolated from humans and in 16% of the strains obtained from the environmental objects. Among persons with acute gastrointestinal diseases serotype 5 was the one which dominated, and among strains from the environment--serotype 8 Sakazaki. Serological type 15 was revealed for the first time in the USSR at the territory of Siberia and the Far East among the NAG-vibrio strains isolated from the environment.

[Seasonal dynamics of the abundance of vibrios and related microorganisms in the Don River].

The density of bacteria of the Vibrio, Aeromonas and Comamonas genera the Don river was subject to seasonal variations. The maximal vibrio concentration was recorded at the water temperature of 22 degrees C, and of Aeromonas and Comamonas--at lower temperature. Unlike Aeromonas, vibrios displayed a reverse dependence of the density on the extent of water contamination.
